Nope__ I think most of us want to think that we're in the gray area. That's why I put which affiliation you most closely identify with so that we could get a real sense of the break-down.

Addendum: Would you prefer I broke it down to:

Conservative Nutball
Rational Conservative
Liberal Douche
Rational Liberal

Who really cares. Yes__ I'd hope we all aspire to be independent thinkers who are well schooled in critical thought. But at the end of the day__ most or all of us (that aren't indifferent) generally sympathize with various political persuasions.

Are we going by American conservative definitions here? Using the standard scale of (from left to right):

Marx - Hitler - Stalin - Obama - Carter - The Main Stream Media - Fox - Reagan (what he actually did) - The Founding Fathers - God - Reagan (what American conservatives think he did)
the world is in greater peril from those who tolerate or encourage evil than from those who actually commit it- Albert Einstein

I guess it'd depend on your own perception of conservatism and liberalism. I would go with how you personally define the philosophies and detach yourself from the applications of leaders who you feel abused their power (unless you feel that it is an inseparable application).

That has no real relevance to this thread (or most any thread).

Then decide if it relates more closely to conservatism or liberalism.

Nah, I can't vote for either of them and I don't know what that third option really means. Seems to me conservatives and liberals both are all about telling everyone else what to do and what to think. Screw em both I say.
But good luck on your poll! Whatever it might be you are trying to find out I wish you success, sir.

Wait... Hitler was left of Stalin?

Oh, right... American conservative definitions where "conservative" means "stupid." Understood.

This.

Especially the underlined part.

As for your poll, how about people who identify as socially liberal and fiscally conservative? Or socially conservative but fiscally liberal? (Yeah, I realize this question basically mirrors patches' question about libertarians, I just thought it deserved being repeated.)

You can't pigeonhole everybody into only 2 categories. The fact that so many wish to is a sign of how screwed up politics has become. It's not a dichotomy, as your poll would suggest. It's a continuum, much like with sexuality. But whatevs, this is off topic and doesn't answer your question.

I suppose if forced to choose one, I would go with liberal. While I can't stand the liberal's fiscal outlook, I much prefer their social agenda to the conservative social agenda, so I guess liberal more accurately describes me, but still, not really. I'd rather judge each issue separately, rather than subscribe to an agenda wholesale. Really, libertarian describes me best.

I think the only way to categorize people, politically, is with regard to specific issues. I fancy myself a Libertarian, but I don't agree with the Libertarian stance on immigration. Does that mean I'm kicked out of the Libertarian Party? Does that mean I'm a California socialist?

That's pretty much the main issue with modern democracy, imo.

Im a liberal leftist, but god damn some annoying crap comes out of the political parties you find in that area of the political spectrum.

That's the one, although I understand there's some debate. National Socialist after all.
