Star Wars

Post by btownmeggy »

Well, I finally own all 6 of the Star Wars movies, so the past couple of days, I've begun watching them all in sequence. It's got me pondering on the BIG QUESTIONS of Star Wars.

Which is your favorite Star Wars movie? How do you compare the original trilogy and the new trilogy (I'd especially love to hear the opinions of people who saw the new trilogy before they ever saw the original trilogy, on this one)?

Personally, my favorite is probably Return of the Jedi, but I like all of them except Episode II. Episode II is awesome visually and from a cultural perspective (within the Star Wars universe), but the acting--eek! And the romance--aaagh! Comparing the newer ones and the older ones: I am not virulently anti-newer trilogy, like most of the people my age and older that I know. They're different, but they're both quite bad and quite good in their own ways. Episode III is certainly my 2nd favorite of them all, despite still having Hayden Christiansen (sp?) in it. The cool thing about the newer trilogy is their explication of the larger universe explored in the literature and games.

the original trilogy is far, far away the better trilogy. the newer films do nothing for me and my only interest is in seeing some expansion on the characters background.

my favourite is empire, but my favouriite scenes are the two deathstar attacks - i guess i'm still that little kid who used to pretend to be luke skywalker using empty kitchen towel rolls as lightsabers.

i am 29. when watching the films probably closer to 9.

Love the Star Wars movies especially the old trilogy. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was awesome, but the first 2 of the new trilogy let me down a little. Though I did like that scene where Yoda fights Count I'm the lamest sith apprentice ever.

The newer series went on its own route a little too. I am not an expert on the subject but the original series I feel implied that the Emperor was stronger than Vader, but the New trilogy said that Vader was the most powerful.

Out of all the episodes it is hard to pick a favorite. If I had to Choose it would either be Episode III or Episode VI.

I couldn't agree more. I remember watching the origonal Trilogy as a kid, then watching Episode I, and gagging.

ROJ is my favourite, although the ESB bits with Yoda are my favourite moments. The new trilogy is pretty cool in some ways, but it suffers from pandering to the lowest common denominator a bit (and from those hideous 'love' scenes).
Did you get the HD versions of the SW films?

No. I already had Episodes IV, V, and VI on videos from the '80s. I bought a video of Episode II for $1 a couple of months ago. A couple of weeks ago, I bought used DVDs from Blockbuster of the other two.

QFT.
Yeah, maybe we are just in love with the nostalgia. But I just don't see how the new ones hold a candle to the originals in anything other than sfx.

I'm in my mid twenties, and mine is ROTJ all the way. The 2nd trilogy is total crap, I have no idea what Lucas was thinking other than having more greens in his bank account. Jar-Jar Binx is a disgrace , and that guy who played young vader is an offense to the art of acting. However, the best of the 3 is EP. III, It's more action packed than the rest of the 3, and doesn't have boring sucked-up romantic stories.

Yikes!

I LOVE the originals. Empire is the dogs bollocks, and if i had to have sex with a man it would be han solo, even if he isn't real.

I rememebr goign to see episode one, and getting SO excited when the 'a long time ago...' etc came up, and then being on the verge of weeping with anger for teh next two hours.

Jar jar binks? the force is little thingies in your blood? And what happened to george lucas the director? They were badly written, badly paced, badly acted. Most of all they didn't have chewie, han, luke, leia, obi wan or darth. Well they had a shite obi wan. Instead they had natalie portman with her jaw wired shut, haydn christensen being out-acted by a CGI tree, and ewan macgregor looking like he wished he had never signed up in the first place. Ugh.
part III was OK... but still not a patch. I hated them. It was like, to quote an entirely different review, like catching your favourite uncle masturbating in a playgorund.
I grew up with star wars. Those prequels still offend me. I am going to ban my children from watching them.

Problem is comparing them. When I was originally watching EP. I (I had my birthday party early just as an excuse to go see it.) I compared it to the original series I thought it was absolute crap. However when I went back and watched it without thinking about the original series, my opinion did change a little and I didn't think it was that bad. Forgettable but not a terrible movie.

EP 1, was horrid. With that lame ass binks character and those MORONIC droids, omg wtf was up with them?! And making the universe so High-techy really compromised with the feel the first trilogy had. He should have sticked with tin-can droids, keep the cgi to minimum and focus on a thrilling story. And also pick real ACTORS who will make their characters epic and unforgettable. He failed at all categories in my opinion.

i will give my boy chocolate and sweets while watching the old films, and beat him with a stick while watching the new ones. he would then associate the good and bad feelings with the films and be as biased as i am.

The original trilogy was great ! The 3rd episodewas on par with the original but the 1st episode was horrible and the 2nd was little better. Better fighting saved it lol.

My favorite would have to be Return of the Jedi. I dont know why but when I see that final tree party with the ewoks it just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

I saw the new trilogy before I saw the original. I think it makes a big difference in the order, since you see Anakin as a boy and not as Vader in your first viewing. The original trilogy may have been a little bit better, but not by much. I can not see what people hate in the new trilogy.

I love the original trilogy, and Empire Strikes Back is the best of them. The new films were all shite, including episode 3. Their only saving grace were the fight scenes with Darth Maul. The fight scene with Yoda in episode 2 was reminiscent of the rabbit from The Holy Grail armed with a lightsaber.

Han Solo was always the main man and the new trilogy didn't have an equivalent character to pull it off, just fancy CGI and a legion of devoted (now disillusioned) fans.

"Empire."
"Blasphemy."
"Empire had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. That's what life is, a series of down endings. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets."

Star Wars is mediocre.

IV, V and VI were a lot of fun in their way, but the 3 recent films were very very bad. Every time I see a bit of one of them the dialogue makes me want to cry, and the editing makes me want to kick the TV in.

I'd say VI was my favourite as my godfather is in it! Woo!

Star Wars bad. BAD Star Wars.
