Which part of Cuba is better?

Post by Symmetry »

I'm slightly weirded out by the knee-jerk reactions to Communism possibly having good things about it in the other thread, so here's a poll about a country close to the US that has a Communist part and a Capitalist part.

I voted "the Communist part" because only that part has banned ships flying the pirate ("Falklands") flag from docking in its ports, in accord with the international legal consensus.

However, I don't think Gitmo is a very capitalist place since 100% of the property in or on it is owned by the U.S. government.

Yikes wikipedia
I know the differences but if u want a discussion why assume that everybody does:) cuba isnt communistic to the full and no country is capitalistic to the full as it were meant and written from the beginning. All countries are a mish mash of stuff that the ruling elite sell to the people and we buy it :-$

It seemed like a good place to start. I'm no fan of wiki, but it's useful. How would you classify Cuba, or indeed the US if you were making the poll?

LoL i KNEW that question woul come:)

Cuba is according to me a state that COULD have accived so much more if it werent forced into the soviet fold in the olden days by us embargo. Then the revolution died when u cretae an institution of leaders that dont give u p the power and allow change. Mao said one true thing freely quoted:" every generation needs to do a revolution against itself"

Power corupps people and absolute power corrups well ... u get it

US well thats the closest we get to an actual capitalism.... but its not cause they saved the banks in the financial crisis and so on in a true capitalism well go down...!

How to ask the poll dont know really that depends on what u want, u seemed miffed :) about how people reacted to communism... i would say that they dont know waht it really is... really really is! and the "backbone feeling" has we say in sweden is i dont know that i dont lke it, or ive heard its bad i dont like it then u delve and ask do u know what it is ... well no, how can u have an opionion... and so on:)

hope u get my meaning

I'm not miffed at all, and to be fair the question was always going to come up given your previous post, so don't feel bad for expecting it.

Thanks for the reply though.

I think the United States' foreign policies totally blew it with the knee jerk response to the fall of Batista in 1959. The revolution gave America six years to prepare for a new Cuba and the departure of the president they preferred. Narrow vision prevailed and US diplomacy & paranoia about a socialist state in the west only made the interaction between the two neighboring countries grind to a halt. Sanctions mostly affected the citizens of Cuba and not it's government.

The "threat" perceived --prior to Soviet support for Castro-- was misguided and led to a lot of decisions that have taken decades to undo.

More than 200 times as many people prefer Communist run Cuba to the part run by the US at the moment, if the poll is anything to go by.

Not last time I checked. The lady at the charity shop did give me a strange look when I bought Mao's Little Red Book and a history of anarchism a few years ago though. I assume she put me on a watch-list.

The best place in Cuba is the former Bacardi's rum plant, oh, and the beach.

I have a question. If you've been to Cuba (not counting Gitmo), does that make you a communist?

Another question. If you've been to Gitmo, does that make you a terrorist?

Complicated question- the CIA funded terrorists who invaded during the Bay of Pigs debacle were certainly terrorists when they went to Cuba.

On the other hand, the guards and wardens at Gitmo are probably just following orders.
