What does that have to do with Guiscard?

As him about the Carpomys melanurus, he'll tell you it's extinct.

What does this have to do with anything? So science is wrong occasionally--that's the fundamental base of science. We make assumptions based on the evidence, and change them as we find out we're wrong. Newton's laws have even been disproven (partially). This thing seems really minor.

Perhaps I don't understand your point.

You ever been in a spital/had an operation 2dimes? cos if you have, without academics you would be dead. Newton, Fleming etc- either genuine academics in their own right, or practically applied ideas that academics came up with.
Use your brain old bean. We'd still be living in caves (well, one third of us-the rest would be dead through disease) without academics.

So noone saw this little baby for about 100 years and people assumed it to be extinct, and now it turns out it wasn't, but what about it? How is this in any way related to Guiscard?

How can you be so blind? He is clearly directly responsible for this outrageous blunder and should resign from office immediately.

This might be why scientists say "presumed extinct" instead of "definitely proven extinct".

Even if they occasionally shorten it in "casual" writings and conversation, the "presumed" part is almost ALWAYS understood by real scientists ... and no TRUE scientist will dispute it if pressed.
It is not academia's fault that so many people seem to think the world is, or should be, full of absolutes.

what about academics that deal in the soft sciences? Any respect for them? Isn't Guiscard more of a history guy than a science guy?

Guiscard is more of a history guy than a science guy. Those soft science guys are a bit of a joke anyway. Probably just draining on all the research grants that could be actually used for something that would be beneficial to someone.

Tis sooth. It also seems the hard science guys aren't wasting enough money searching for obscure Philippine mammals. So... can we have a few of those grants?

you know who else doesn't respect academia, Gene Ray, the genius behind the awesomitude of TIMECUBE!

http://www.timecube.com/

some of his better snippets:

"Academia is an accreditation of real
stupidity - deadly to all humanity.
Dumb ass teachers fear Time Cube
and will eat dung before debating it.
Dumb students are educated stupid."

"Truth about Santa Claus debunks
Santa God. God evolves from Santa."

"God created only a single 24 hour day
rotation of Earth, while I have created
4 simultaneous 24 hour days within a
single rotation of Earth - therefore, I
am wiser than the word god, and all
word worshipers. All words are fictitious."

"Hey stupid - are you too
dumb to know there are
4 different simultaneous
24 hour days within a
single rotation of Earth?
Greenwich 1 day is a lie.
4 quadrants = 4 corners,
and 4 different directions.
Each Earth corner rotates
own separate 24 hour day.
Infinite days is stupidity."

absolutely hilarious stuff. some of the best reading that can be found on the interweb, chums.
have you ever seen an idealist with grey hairs on his head?
or successful men who keep in touch with unsuccessful friends?
you only think you did
i could have sworn i saw it too
but as it turns out it was just a clever ad for cigarettes.
