Earthquake today?

Post by DaGip »

I just heard something, my ears are ringing to beat the band! I believe there to be an EARTHQUAKE in the ASIAN sector today...CHINA OR RUSSIA!

An earthquake striking (I'm assuming from risk) the biggest continent? Damn that's unlikely

Dude, I know you don't believe me, but this has happened so many times that I don't even question it anymore. Somehow my ears pick up the sounds of earthquakes. This one was incredibly strong and left my ears ringing for like five minutes or so!

Look, DaGip, I like you and I don't want to have to tell you how ridiculous you're being. But here's a simple fact for you... earthquakes happen literally every day. Any other human beig could predict earthquakes equally as accurately as yourself by doing nothing more than tossing coins and making random guesses.

Here's a fact that you may or may not be aware of:
Wikianswers wrote:aproximately 2600 earthquakes happen in a day
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_earthquakes_happen_each_day

Is it really so improbable that one of those would fall into the region you describe (y'know, Asia, the one that takes up about a fifth of the world's surface)? Is that really a prediction, or is it just a statement of inevitable fact?

"But those are probably silly little earthquakes that nobody notices" you cry, "I feel the big ones". Sure you do DaGip, those 1000+ 'damaging' earthquakes (richter 5.0-5.9) that occur every year (approx 3 a day). Or did you mean the 139 (approx) even larger ones (Richter 6+) that occur every year? Seriously, your 'predictions' aren't predictions at all. Everybody who knows anything about earthquakes already knows that there's going to be several pereceptible and damaging ones every 24 hours.
Source: http://www.wreg.com/Global/story.asp?S=5659315

The point basically, is that so many earthquakes happen that it's impossible for your predictions ever to be wrong, and as such they are meaningless (especially when you're being so vague as to say "Asia, somewhere, some kind of quake, some time".

There's just nothing to link your sore-ears (see a Dr, you'll thank me in the long term) with the everyday phenomena of earthquake occurance. There's just no nexus, and no matter how much you want there to be... you have no demonstrable link. I mean, feel free to think you forsee earthquakes... but it's like me claiming to be able to use my digestive patterns to mystically forsee that the sun will rise each morning.

In other words, you're leading yourself on; you're imagining that your infrequently suffered circumstances are somehow linked to grand-sounding, but utterly mundane, world events. If I were to say "I can sense Blondes: whenever I wake up with a slightly achey back, then I know that I will see one on the way to work", then you'd think I was being ridiculous, right? Me having back problems and me walking past normal looking people on the way to my office is completely unconnected. My back will occassionally ache, and there will always be blondes on the way to work.
The only difference between my story and yours, is that you percieve earthquake occurance to be a rare and mystical thing... when in fact it's just as common as seeing people with commonly occuring hair colourations. Do you follow? There's no rarity to earthquakes, and no matter how much you want to link your health complications to their occurance, there's really no link.

To conclude: you're being ridiculous. There will always be a significnatly sized quake on almost (if not every) day of the year. Your aural problems have nothing to do with this. You have talked yourself into believing that two commonly occuring phenomena are somehow connected, when in fact they are not.

Please stop wasting your time with this self-delusion, and please stop trying to convince us that you are some kind of special 'seer'. Earthquakes happen every day, you are no oracle, you are not a beautiful special snowflake. Calm down and accept your normality like a man.

Dancing Mustard about covered it, but I will add one thing. NO WHERE is truly "safe" from Earthquakes. Iaugh when I hear of 4.5-5.4 quakes on my local news (in PA .. for anyone who can't be bothered to check my profile). That is roughly equivalent to your a truck going by. Since the scale is logarithmic, each stop up means a doubling of the intensity... Still, if its not above a 6 ... not much damage. Areas without good Earthquake building codes will get damage in the high 5's, but anything built "to last" pretty much won't.

The BIGGEST quakes actually occur mid-continent. Though the most common quakes are on the edges of the continental plates, where fracturing makes for more faults, pressure builds mid-continent as well. Generally quakes there are mild, but once in a while too much pressure builds up. When THOSE quakes occur ... the amount of pressure released is so high, the damage is quite severe.

I cannot find the reference, but I was told in College that the biggest quake in history was in Kansas.

Okay, let's see you guys do it then. Make a prediction before the quake and put it in the forum. Then look at the USGS website and post your prediction. Stick with only the 6.0 or greater which I am able to hear.

You see, it isn't PREDICTING earthquakes...it's HEARING THEM!

I just farted stinkily. Therefore there will be a quake today, somewhere in the Asia region.

There... perfectly accurate prediction. See you in 24hours when you will owe me $5

Animals CAN predict Earthquakes, so an extent. They are apparently able to feel or hear the termors that predecess a true quake. The USGS has sensitive instruments that can detect extremely faint tremors... and the military, of course can largely tell if there is a major explosion somewhere. BUT, to claim that you can "hear" a quake in Russia ... is just not credible.

I read a lot of your posts, but on this one ... you have gone off the deep end, sorry.

The only logical solution is that DaGip is a super hero. In other news, a few months ago I slept through the one earthquake I'd ever heard of in Illinois. I was disappointed when I was told this the next day.

It sounds like a nasty case of tinnitus. You should see a doctor. Try to get a referral to a shrink while you're there.

But i don't want to be too cynical. The power to predict that a daily occurence is going to happen on any given day is, if true, an awesome responsibility for one man to bear. I'm glad it's fallen on your shoulders, gip.

Don't I know it. I used to like relaxing in quiet places, now nowhere's quiet.
BTW there's no use going to a doctor about it, they can't do anything.

Sometimes medication (aspirin for one) can cause tinninitus, but other than that, yes, it seems to be one of those medical mysteries. Hopefully it will cease as quickly as it began...

I heard DM's fart. I don't know how to explain it, but it's obviously a miracle of modern science with a dose of ESP thrown in. Does this mean i get part of the 5 dollars?
