Internet question

Post by Free Dirt »

Hi, I recently bought my son and iPod touch from apple. I was unaware of the fact that it can go on the Internet, and am not very techno smart. So my question is, is there a way that I can monitor what he's doing on the web via his iPod touch?

Not really... but, you need wifi to get Internet with the Touch.

Don't worry about it... If he's gonna look at anything bad, he's gonna do it whether you like it or not. The only difference is that he'll just have to do a few things to bypass the silly little piece of monitoring software that you put in place.

I don't know of any parents that wouldn't still try it anyway...

EDIT: and some I know would choose to simply take it away altogether if they couldn't monitor it.

You know what sir I just found a program that could help you, go to Microsoft Word on your computer, create and save a new document and name it "*your son's name*'s iPod". Open the file whenever you need, and if your son enters a blacklisted site it will be named in that file.
No offense.

Thanks for your help. But I was also wondering if there was anything I could purchase that monitors activity on my entire wireless network, not just one computer. Any thoughts

how old is your son and why did you buy him such an expensive gift?

I'm guessing that if you're wanting to monitor his browsing, then the answer is not very old -

In truth, I'm not techno savvy enought to know of anything myself. However, my grandmother would just outright take it from me and tell me to go change her oil in her car.... or mow the yard... something like that. Old people are tough.
My mother though would just lie. She'd say something like "they've been recalled, but here I thought of you and got you a regular iPod. I'm a great mom." If she had an iPod she would just switch... give me her regular one and keep the wi-fi one. If I bust her she'd just laugh and say they send them back once they've been repaired.

That's my family. Maybe you can step up and be a bully or play a nice guy and just lie? If it were me however I'd just tell him the truth and switch.

I would take the toy away and buy him some sports equipment.

Otherwise he'll end up fat and deaf and sexually deviated.

Right, 'cause it's not like I can just selectively delete things from my history... Oh, wait, that's right, I can!

Yes, there is, and your dad probably already has it installed and is watching you every day. Best get a better relationship with him or don't go looking at porn until you move out of the hourse.

He is the dad.
The big trouble with dumb bastards is that they are too dumb to believe there is such a thing as being smart.

Yeah, sure.
But just in case he is, the best place for such information is not here. Go to an Apple store and talk to a tech, or go to Best Buy and talk to one of the Geek squad. Another good source for stuff like that is cnet.com.
