Is there a turn system?

First time player here.

It seems it only goes by rounds, once everyone goes the next round begins, and there's no set order.

So once it got down to the last two people, my opponent's moves changed my own map. Essentially blitzing me. He was probably a lot more powerful than I. (fog of war map so idk)
But that was really weird how it seemed like a mad rush when both of us could go at the same time.

Is this just a factor of the game I'll have to get used to?

Sounds like you played freestyle, which is a mad rush most of the time.

There is also Sequential turns where each player takes his turn one after the other in a set order. Freestyle on the other hand is just that, freestyle.
