Question about making a map

Postby thecaptain72 on Thu Nov 29, 2007 1:08 pm

Since I am not good at using any paint program can I draw it. So I get some blank piece of paper and draw a map. Then color it and all that stuff. Any writing about the map I may need for others. Then scan it in to my paint program. Then I can make the proper sizes. Will that work? Then my problem is doing the coordinates for the map. I seen the stuff they have here about it, but not sure how they come about making the coordinates. How do you know the numbers? Thanks for the help.

An initial drawn map would be a good starting place for an idea...

What you might want to do - is present your idea (in map ideas) and if someone with good GFX skills likes it - then partner with them to produce the GFX whilst you take the lead on the gameplay... Co-ords can be sorted later... your GFX partner willhopefully teach you some stuff about how to make images...

Alternatively - you can learn Photoshop via tutorials on the web... but feel free to post up your hand drawn map first to get the idea flowing...

Thanks for the reply. Although I am not good at drawing either I think between my daughter and I we can draw a pretty good map. She is 11, I hope I can get her to help me draw one.

yeti's suggestions are spot on.

The trouble with using a scanned image for you map - and likewise the trouble with using Paint and other lower-end drawing programs - is that it is extremely difficult to make changes. The first map I made for this site went through about 40 different versions over the course of two months, with dozens of major changes and thousdands of minor alterations. If you think you can hand-draw and scan in your map 40+ times and then re-do the Paint work 40 times, go for it... but I think you'll go nuts and end up chucking your computer out of a window.
