Map Ideas and XML

Postby MrBenn on Sat Sep 20, 2008 3:25 pm

I've seen a lot of people worried about XML stuff when they post a map idea or draft, and wondered why XML seems so daunting.
Surely we should be focussing on getting the essence of a map drafted out before being overly concernd with the XML side of things?

But for a standard geographic map there will be no XML issues, and people appear to be daunted by the thought of it... Just wondering if there was a specific reason why...

Prior to actually looking at the XML tutorial (and because of the way it is structured possibly after) it does indeed seem quite a daunting task. I have the idea that most people imagine it to be much more coding-like than it in fact is.

It seems daunting to me since I have no idea how to even begin going anything related to XML. Of course I have no idea how to do the graphics either which is why I lurk rather than create.

Usually you can just get someone to do the XML for you. They are quit simple if you know how to do it.

It is not complicated (from what I see looking at the xmls people post), but it looks as if it takes forever, though no doubt that is probably a misconception as well.

Put it this way - it took me 2 hours to create the Poker.xml...

And that's *probably* the most complex of the XML's here - so it's not that time consuming.

Pretty sure poker has more potential bonus groupings.

Hey Yeti, just a question. Do you use any special editor for that? I assume you don't use notepad ;-)

I just use notepad for my XML! (I suck at graphics, so I got into XML). It's easy as working out the circumference of this circle in nanometres:

o

Seriously though, easy, but takes a little while, so many tags...

I think people are afraid of XML because it is XML they think they have to learn some whole new language or something where as its all really rather simple (well it this case as your coding to a pre-defined set of tags).

Notes in Linux, like Notepad++ with tag highlights but its the standard installed program like Notepad on windows.
