Impressive Maps

Postby lt1001 on Mon Sep 22, 2008 10:18 am

I'm a long time player of Risk and found this site when I was searching for 'online risk'. I have checked out a lot of the maps and I must say, I'm extremely impressed with the graphics work that has gone into a lot of the maps here.

I'm not too bad with GIMP myself so I think I will spend some time tonight putting together a map. I feel very inspired.

I hope this was the right place to put this comment!

and hi everyone!

Code monkey!? I guess I would rather do the graphics than the code that must go behind these maps!

What kind of coding do you use to make these maps yeti_c?

thanks

The game engine relies on an XML definition of the map so that it knows where to place armies - what can attack what - how to give bonuses etc...

They're publically available here www.conquerclub.com/maps

The maps are all coded using XML. The tutorials can be found here, courtesy of yeti.

That answers a lot of my questions!

Thanks yeti_c!

I have just started on some jungle graphics so you should see the result of my labours in about half an hours time. I will draw some more inspiration from what's there

Half an hour? How are we supposed to get the map finished by tonight at that rate?

I am aware that you may be in another timezone from me since you originate from the Netherlands.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe in timezones. It's all in the chakra.

here is this map I have been talking about!

Obviously a lot of inspiration from Feudal War, and obviously would suck in gameplay, but it's a start.

Didn't want to make a new thread since I don't think I will further this idea.

Not bad for a quick idea. You need to really be sure though on the right map for you to pursue. These damn things take months (sometimes years) to quench. Don't pick something that you will get bored with. And expect a lot of criticism towards the beginning, and a lot of nitpicking towards the ending.

Ok I made a map - Doodle Islands. You can check it out in my sig, but I don't see why it would take months to make. I've pretty much finished already....

Misconception #1: the first version is "nearly finished". We all appreciate the joy of releasing the first version of something, and think our own first versions are more or less perfect and can't be improved. Here's a good metric for you from my own first map:

Version 1

Version 24b

I thought my first version was nearly done, as I had created my original vision for the map. Taking people's suggestions can result in a ridiculous improvement in how good your map looks, and you'll be even more proud of it than you were when you first released.
