map making assistance

Postby JrFan88 on Tue Oct 21, 2008 3:12 pm

Dear seasoned mappers;

I am in the process of trying my hand at this difficult skill, and I'm looking for some terrain to add. As I am NOT the most competent artist, creating mountains, fords & passes (for rivers & mountains) - whether they be bridges, symbols or whatnot - are beyond my feeble skills. I have GIMP, and am experimenting with vaious operations, but textures and patteren fills just have not proven satisfactory. What I am looking for are the types of mountains (or something similar) found on several of CC's maps (Africa, Australia, British Isles, and France for example) that I might cut and paste onto an outline map and then build the rest of the map around them. And if anybody can point me to where I can get the types of images that would serve as the aforementioned fords and/or passes, that would be great too. Any suggestions?

As in many things in this life, Google is your friend ;-)

If you search for 'map mountains GIMP tutorial' you'll be bound to find some helpful sites... If there is anything I'm trying to attempt, I'll always google for a Photoshop tutorial first ;-)

if you go to http://forums.cartographersguild.com/ and then join and look under tutorials, you can find plenty of helpful tutorials that might help. Otherwise, yea, google what benn suggested.

wow, first post in the foundry for over a week or more :shock:
