My word on the New Rules

Postby zorba_ca on Mon Jul 10, 2006 8:13 pm

Lots of talk gets us nowhere, so here is what I will call the DEFINITIVE word on the new rules. This is constructive NOT destructive, so working within the framework that Lack has (re)created, here we go:

First, for clarification:

lackattack wrote:As some of you noticed correctly, the staggered order only comes into effect on new rounds. Any round that had already started when the changes went in continues with the old sequential order. This way, nobody loses a turn.

I should have mentioned this in the announcement. Sorry for the confusion.

I know that helped me.

Next, some suggestions:
1. The "Staggered Order" should not be completely random. While I agree it is fine for teammates to not always play sequentially (please to not comment on whether or not it SHOULD be like this - there are plenty of other forums for that), we cannot have UNSTRUCTURED game formats. As well, if a player gets eliminated in a team game, another team will by default have a sequential turn. Structure is the key - it allows for strategy and certainty.

EDIT: Now I see that this was done. Excellent!

2. "Adjacent" and "Chained" are incomplete and non-descriptive terms. They should be renamed, "One (Adjacent Territory Only)" and "One (Line of Command)", respectively. As well, descriptions of what they mean should be added to the "How to Play" page. If it helps:

One (Adjacent Territory Only) means that at the end of your turn you only get one fortification and it must be between any two bordering territories. In a team game, you may fortify to any partners' territory so long as it is adjacent. The fortification may be of any number of armies.

One (Line of Command) means that at the end of your turn you only get one fortification and it may be between any two territories in your control so long as you hold all territories in between them. In a team game, you may fortify to any partners' territory so long you personally hold all the territories in between the territory from which you are fortifying from and your partners' territory which you are fortifying to. You may NOT fortify through a partners' territory. The fortification may be of any number of armies.

3. Allowing a teammates' deadbeat armies to come under the control of non-deadbeat teammember creates an environment ripe for abuse. Without getting into too many details, the point is that if you sign up for a team game and a partner deadbeats, you may want to consider a new partner in the future. This issue is SEPARATE from the need for deadbeats to suffer more severe penalties. Deadbeats should lose points if they lose and not gain any if they win. End of story.

That's it for now.

I like the intent of the new rules. I just think they need to be tweaked to ensure fairness, promote clarity and prevent abuse.

As far as I am concerned, if you can understand how a chain link works, that is fine. And if you have any general knowledge, or a handy dictionary, you should know what adjacent means. ;)
