Show Text for new round in Game chat

Postby tals on Thu Jan 11, 2007 1:49 pm

Can we have it so when a new round occurs it puts text into the chat. Something like
Round X

The chat in team games can sometimes be very confusing as you try and work out if it was relevant for this turn or previous turns.

Good idea, I like it, provided it's easy enough to implement.

If it takes a lot of programming though it's not worth the hassle.

Game Chat, Add 'Incrementing game to round X' [Unclassified]

Postby riskmonger on Thu Jul 26, 2007 4:45 pm

Adding a statement in the Game Chat window such as "Incrementing game to round X", similar to what we see in the Game Log window, would make the in-game chatter between opponents and teammates a bit more organized.

I've played several games where teammates chat quite frequently, and I find it annoying to have to look at the time stamp to determine how relevant their strategies are to the particular round the game is in. Including a one line statement in the Game Log that declares when a new round begins would be quite useful in sorting out information and strategies. I'm guessing this would be fairly easy to implement, as the function already exists for the Game Log window. Thoughts?

I've never had a problem with this. I just always used the date to figure stuff like this out. I see how this could be useful though.

I think this was mentioned before, but I am unsure if it was ever commented on directly. I do remember discussion that it disrupts the flow of the game chat, and that it wasn't needed due to the Round already being stated above the 'Time Remaining'.

But your case for making comments easier to track for relevance is new, so we'll have to see!

I don't know... right now you look at the timestamp in chat and just scroll until you get to it in the Game Log. Whereas if this were implemented you would look at the Round # and scroll until you got to it in the Game Log. It's not a big deal, just an easier number to remember. Plus, like Andy mentioned it would break the flow of the chat.

I'm not particularly for this idea, but if it gets implemented it wouldn't bother me.

But that's what I love about this so much. It breaks up the chat so you know your partner was telling you to take SA four rounds ago, not right now. Or that somebody messed up at the beginning of the game, not the round that he just blitzed the half the board.

I dont think it would be to good an idea...especially in long games with almost no chatting...all we would see then is:

Incrementing game to round 37
Incrementing game to round 38
Incrementing game to round 39
Incrementing game to round 40
Incrementing game to round 41
Incrementing game to round 42...etc.

It's not a big deal at all.

With a little less laziness you could figure out when the chat took place. Even better, just pay attention to the chat. If you read the chat everytime it's your turn then there will be much less confusion (assuming you don't miss several turns).

This isn't needed but I see how it would make people's lives easier. Good thing to implement if there's nothing better to do.

Maybe an option, or maybe, for the longer games, archive the chat, into a separate box, or drop option, above.
Either that or, after say 5 rounds, you eliminate the first round.
So, it would look something like this.
Round 1:
Blah Blah Blah
Round 2:
Blah Blah Blah
Round 3:
Blah Blah Blah
Round 4:
Blah Blah Blah
Round 5:
Blah Blah Blah
(After this point, the only thing displayed would be the chat, minus the "Round 1" Heading.

and, you'd take one away every time you incremented a round.

Round number in Chat Log

Postby xmaveric on Tue Apr 08, 2008 1:18 pm

Concise description:
  • Could you add the round number to the chat logs? example:

    2008-04-02 08:05:41 R7 - Blablabla: good game, everyone

This would be handy to reference what people are saying with what round they said it.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • The Game Chat log

This was once suggested a while ago, but I think the majority of the responders didn't like that it would unecessarily spam chat. But we'll see if there is a new sentiment.

A couple of characters here and there wouldn't hurt - and would be ace if you ask me.

I think I wouldn't mind it being a setting that you could apply to all games in your Game Settings page...but you know how Lack hates those things. :)

Seems like an easy thing to implement, that would take very little space in the log. 4 characters, at most.

Yeah I think this is a good idea, I often find myself scrolling through the game log trying to find what round it was when somebody said something, according to the time.
