World Cup?

Postby BlackZ on Mon Jan 03, 2011 9:02 am

Don't know if it has been suggested before, or if it exists, but wouldn't it be awesome to have a sort of World Cup thingie. A qualification round first among players from each nation (based on which nation u are from (or represent)) and then a final tournament among the best from each nation. It could be an annual thing.

I have checked out other topics and can see that there are mostly suggestions towards new features, and this isn't exactly a feature, I know. But since a potential world cup is only interresting if ppl care about it, I thought I'd see if there were any interrest for it. Also, I thought I would probably get feedback on if an idea of the sort had already been discussed.

Therefore I haven't just added it on a possible tournament. Also, it might be a better idea to build up some interrest on, I dunno, national forums (like an American or Swedish one) and set up a national tournament first and consider the world cup idea later, when or if the national tournaments are a success. Just an idea.

Somewhat related to this idea---is a big-giant Official type tournament---Lack has some ideas, which I think will make their way out this year in 2011!

That would probably be fun for people in countries like Norway, who would have maybe 20 legitimate contenders to make it into the world cup part of it. But, the vast majority of the site, which seem to come from the USA, Canada, and England would have virtually no chance at being a part of it, due to the sheer number of players from our country.

In 2008 I started the Olympic Tournament. There were qualifications for players from each countries to play on their countries home-map. Afterwards best players qualified for a Continental Stage. The Main Tournament started with 30 players from 30 different countries from all 6 Continents.

Difficulties:
- a lot of top-players ain't interested
- friends from the same country can mess up national qualification
- flags don't always show the real country
- USA has a lot of players, so less changes for Americans

Also I think more games have to be played for qualification to get the best players to the Finals. In my Tournament players from US Virgin Islands & Northern Mariana Islands reached the Final, because of the relatively easy qualifications.

So the idea is great, but it probably will only have success if you make it an Official CC Tournament with good rewardings and maybe some seedings. Also more qualifying games can filter the better players to go through. And probably it will be better to let more players from the same countries qualify to further stages, so that for instance only the Final consists of players from different countries.

if u make the qualification matches 1v1 u won't have the trouble with friends from same country messing up the national qualie and if u make it about which country u choose to represnt (this goes somewhat agianst the idea of a world cup, fighting for one's own nation) u could make that work too. after all, u can't exactly know for sure what nationality anyone's from.

and if the americans need more time playing their qualie, then let them have that. it would probably be an annual thing anyway so as long as it fits within a year (hopefully even half a year or shorter).

as for the top players issue, if they don't want to play then they don't want to play. can't do anything 'bout that. There are world champions every year that win without beforehand proving themselves favourites or even superior in statistics or ranking. Also, in many tournaments sometimes the very best players choose not to play or get injured (could happen here too:P), but a world champion will still be a world champion.

imo I believe a fair and "universal" map variant will be harder to find. I now classic to be the only one that doesn't favour one nation, sort of.

btw, nice idea with the olympic games tournament. seemed cool:D

hmm.. maybe the "amount of players"-problem is greater than I had thought it was. one could limit this by, for instance setting a demands for participation on for instance a minimum amount of played games. percentage of turns taken. minimum rating, rank etc. (last two I'm not such big a fan of.

also, additional idea:

one could make different classes of wc's.

Like a junior class, intermediate and senior class.
ex:
Jr. (50-200 games played)
Int.(201-500 games played)
Sr. (501+)

could also make additional classes. This way one shortens the amount of time passed for the tournament(s) and should be more interresting for experienced players as well as less experienced ones.

soccer, for instance, have multiple world cups and tournaments at different levels, divided by age. why not divide this on amount of games played (amount of experience)?
