Announcing Alliance Details

Postby wicked on Tue Sep 26, 2006 3:17 pm

I know this is a grey area, but we need a ruling on this sooner rather than later.

Suggestion: Alliance details must be announced in game chat.

Why: It's only fair; secretly-formed alliances give the allied players a distinct advantage, as they know the details and non-allied players do not. If you were playing the board game, you'd know the details. Uninformed players (e.g. newbies) can get broadsided and not know what happened, thus giving them a negative gaming experience. In games like the Battle Royale, where it's impossible to keep up with players anyway through lack of assigned color, it's definitely needed.

I have a feeling she's talking about me and ptreey :)

So here's our case. We formed an alliance last month (actually me, ptreey, and nekofisher) as noted here:

2006-08-28 19:33:11 - superkarn: nekofisher, ptreey, and superkarn are in temporary alliance. let's call it... the Freedom Fighters =)

Then she told us that we needed to disclose more information regarding the alliance. We disagreed on how much information was needed to be made public so i started a topic. You can read about it here: 92393. But in the spirit of fairness and sportsmanship, we did anyway:

2006-08-30 16:02:28 - superkarn: but in spirit of fair game, the Freedom Fighters are fighting to take control of North and South Americas
2006-08-30 16:03:15 - superkarn: if you guys are interested in more details.... i guess ask and we'll open our gameplan to you...
2006-08-30 16:03:30 - superkarn: but that's all we got for now, try to take North and South America

I agree with her about how it's tough to keep track of stuff in the Battle Royale game (56724). But our strategy was out in the open. We said what we were gonna do. And we did that. It just happened to be in the span of almost a month because of the nature of the game. Nothing's changed since (except nekofisher deadbeat'd because he went on vacation and didn't have access to a computer).

Sorry to have to take you out of the game, wicked. Nothing personal. We just wanted take South America, and you happened to be there.

This isnt the cheating and abuse forums. No need to defend yourself before any accusations are made.

Wicked is just suggesting something to add to the gameplay experience.

I got an idea, there should be a way in the game that when u make allies, its official, not just in the game chat, but like your names are grouped together or there is an alliance name next to you, so u can distinguish who is allied, or if there are special agreements, there should be a way to store them, not in a game chat, but somewhere else, like a link we click on and see alliances. Cause personally i hate alliances and in a regular game i try not to ally w anyone, but batle royalle is a little diffrent since there are way to many people playing u need an edge to get ahead, specially when people are attacking u, but others are saving up and have 100+ dudes just chillin there.

What Penguin said. :P
This is something that was going on well before Battle Royale; that's just what reminded me of it. I could care less about the game, that's not what this is about.

All alliances, all requests for alliances and all discussions about potential alliances should be in the game chat. Anything les than this is unfair. I am fed up with people pm'ing me asking if I want to ally. I NEVER ally anywhere other than game chat, in fact I only ally on rare occasions anyway.

Finally some reason and sanity. I get PM'd offers for alliances during games and then I go embarrass them in chat about it. I'm tired of doing it, so I think this is fair all around. If you were sitting at a table around the game, you couldn't sneak a note under the table or pull them into the nearest closet to discuss an alliance ... or would you? :D

I disagree with announcint the details, just announce the alliance.

If you were playing the board there could be alliances without you knowing the details. I have played team games in person, you just talk where nobody can hear you.

damn keys keep moving on my keyboard.

Hm, I'm torn on this issue....why? Because whenever I use to play world domination with my friends...I'd sometimes make alliances (mostly just out of spite and fun, hehe)...We'd keep a notepad handy, so the opposing players wouldn't know what we are planning or how long our alliance was going to last.

I think diplomacy is a part of this game. If they tell you that there is an alliance between <user A> and <user B> for 'x' turns, you will know to watch out, and plan for the end. Perhaps if the details were given, the overall strategy in the game would go down...if I know 'Action C' is going to take place at 'x time', I will know when to prepare. Not knowing keeps you on your toes...

Hm, I don't know if I made sense. But as of right now, I'm leaning toward an announcement of only the alliance, and not of the details regarding it.

Also Wicked...thanks for actually using the form! I'm going to start to crack down on people using the form...

Maybe I am on the outside for this one, but, I would prefer to be PM'd about a possible alliance, then, if an agreement is made, announce it in chat.

As for what should be announced, this player and that have an alliance, that's about it. This game is about strategy, it does no good to announce what your strategy is.

Just a fairly inexperienced CC player's opinion.

Yes, I got what he meant.

What I was saying is it seems like a waste of time when if you want alliances to be that official just play a team game.

Hey, just in case you guys haven't seen it, I posted a poll about this exact issue here http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5777

I agree with Andy. But from that post, I've come to a conclusion that it's best to set this before you start the game. For example, if i were to play a new game with wicked, then i would try not to have an alliance. But if it's necessary for me to survive/win, then i would announce what she thinks is fair. Everybody's happy :)

ps nice one on the Penguin

I rather like it the way it is, just ask in the chat so everybody knows that negotiations are going on and anything else can be kept private. I guess people will know the alliance is over when you start hitting each other anyway.

There is a strategy that i use that fits in an alliance category, but not really alliance by definition. If i (red) start off with a bunch of territories in one area and blue starts off with a bunch in another area. And if i have one estrange territory near him, and he near me. Then i would offer the "trade". He decides what he wants to do with my armies there, and i decide what to do with his armies near me. If he accepts, then we post in the chat.

Usually we try to make it fun by writing something like "Red and Blue have made a deal on manual labor trade." Or something in that nature. But we don't go out and say "Red is going to use Egypt to attack Afghanistan. Blue is going to use Western US to attack Central America."

Oops, forgot about the Middle East
On that note, some people might not know, you can attack from Great Britain to Scandinavia. The map just doesn't show it :P
