I agree with everything that Jack and Nut have said.
Additionally, though, there are three CC maps that do a really good job of accurately portraying the feel of a historical conflict -- to not just show a map of the battle, but to have game mechanics that recreate the strategic considerations of the men who fought there. The three outstanding historical maps are WWI Gallipoli, Stalingrad, and Baltic Crusades. All three are beautifully done, beautifully researched, and have game mechanics that truly reflect the strategic issues of the time. Of the three standouts, however, WWI Gallipoli and Stalingrad are big and complex and a lot of work to play. Baltic Crusades is the only one that's relatively quick and easy.
