How do you make mountains look like mountains on uncrossable borders.

get a handful of mud, shape into a flat cone, and sprinkle with icing sugar. Take digital photo, (From a long way away) after getting a dozen prints developed - cut out mountains, Get a pritstick, and glue to screen.

Hey presto! instant mountains.

Personally, I like paper maché, it gives the mountains a dryer look.

And WTF is a pritstick?

If you're using photoshop I would start with making a new layer for your mountains. This allows you to easily edit them. Pick a brown color, and draw them on with either the paintbrush or pencil. Then add a texture, I think mine (in the north america map) are with the sandstone texture. You can add other effects that will make them look more real, or stand out more too.

It really depends on the style of your map.

If you use google image search for terms like, 'fantasy map', 'game map', and 'ancient map' as Andy suggested you'll see lots of ideas, and reference material.

Get a physical map of the United States and cut em off the map. Shrink 'em and add them into your map. Or, get any picture of a mountain range and use it. SIMPLE!

EDIT: Even better, on the Lord of the Rings Risk map there are perfect mountain ranges you can use. This other guy is using them on his map of Middle Earth.
