November 2020 Challenge -- The First World War

Official Monthly Challenge for November 2020
Brought to you by the Community Team.

The Great War of 1914 to 1918 was called the First World War, for it was fought on every continent and every ocean, and eventually sucking in nations controlling about 90% of the world's population. It began as primarily a European war. Its prime movers, in Berlin and Paris and London and Vienna and Moscow, lived within 30 degrees of longitude of each other, were mostly related by birth and on personal speaking terms prior to the war. Probably less than 20 men, European aristocrats all, were involved in the initial decisions that lit the fuse. And yet, from there the conflict spread, through minor powers like Serbia and Italy, through overseas allies like Japan and Nejd, through client states like the Ottoman Empire and Siam, through colonies like Australia and South Africa, and finally through independent powers initially disinterested like the U.S.A. and Brazil.

November SCOREBOARD

No Sign-Ups Required

In this Challenge, you will juggle multiple tasks. On the one hand, you will play the scenario "1914 Proper", which was written by DoomYoshi five years ago to simulate on the Europe1914 map, as accurately as possible, the system of alliances entangling the major European Powers at the beginning of the Great War. This scenario features Quads teams. You cannot join with a pre-set team. You use the Scenario engine to reserve a spot and get put with whoever is randomly chosen for you. Like all scenarios, 1914 Proper involves no risk of points, so even high-rankers can play without fear. I played it a lot when it first came out, and I think it does a really good job of using the map to illustrate the strategic problems of the time.

While playing the scenario games, you must also play the game on the various war Fronts in order to score. The game choice is wide open on those -- the only mandatory settings are Sequential, 24-hour turns, and a 20-round limit. Everything else is optional, so play them foggy, sunny, trenchy, flat, nuclear, whatever suits your style. Including terminators, 1v1s, team games, polys, anything.

The scoring system tries something new and different. Master Key tokens are earned on the scenario. They are absolutely key! Master Key tokens do not actually contribute to your score, but they limit your score on other maps. Your score on any map CANNOT EXCEED the number of master keys you have! In other words, you must win at least one game on the scenario map for every win you have on the subsidiary fronts.

Medal Requirement
You must collect at least 7 different tokens including at least one Master Key. In other words, at least one Master Key and at least six other tokens. So you can afford to ignore a maximum of one map.

FAQs:

Who can play a Challenge?
Challenges are open to everyone!

How do I join?
No signups required. Join and/or create games that meet the given parameters for this month as found in the OP. Only public games count towards the challenge unless otherwise explicitly stated in the challenge OP. There is also a "join games" link in the OP to provide an easy list of qualifying games.

What are the prizes?
All players who meet or exceed the minimum number of required points for the month will earn a Challenge Achievement Medal. The point requirements change every month as we aim to provide a vast assortment of challenges which includes a varying level of difficulty.

Site Event Medals are awarded to the top three finishers on the challenge scoreboard.
1st: Image
2nd: Image
3rd: Image

In addition to the medals, the first place finisher receives: 1 Green Conquer Star
Image
And the 2nd-5th place finishers receive: 1 Blue Conquer Star
Image

When do I get my prize?
My goal is always to award prizes during the week following the completion of the event.

How do we deal with deadbeating?
Please report deadbeats in your games by sending me a PM. I will periodically do a random check however I cannot monitor every game. We will evaluate the distribution of prizes to a violating player on a case by case basis.

Tiebreakers?
Ties are awarded to the player who reached the point threshold first.

A player has me foed and it is preventing me from joining a lot of challenge games. What can I do?
PM the player in question. Be courteous and non-accusatory, ask why you are foed. Do your best to resolve any issues with the other user in this manner. However, if they decided not to remove you from their foe list then you will need to join games without that player or start your own.

What if I want to run a parallel tournament to the challenge?
Okay, awesome! Individual tournaments can be added to the challenges so that those games drop tokens. Send me a PM and we will get it added for the month.

Rulings:
1. Deadbeats will have entry points stripped.
2. Wins by round limit will drop tokens.
3. Inventory relating to the challenge will vanish at the end of the year.
4. Bot games do not drop tokens.
5. Any unforeseen abuse is still abuse. Don't take advantage of the system.

If you have any further questions or issues not covered here please either post in the active challenge thread or PM groovysmurf.

It means that if you have 1 win on the master key map, you get scored a maximum of 1 on the other ones also.
If you have 2, you get scored a maximum of 2 on the other ones.

About Master key . Is that mean ?
If some one get 1 master key , the maximum score he can get is 7 (one each from each 7 map) , even he win more than 7 token from other maps ?
If some get 2 master key , the maximum score he can get is 14 ( 2x 7 )
.
is it like that ? Am I correct ?
.
By the way it seems master key games might take long time as they are 50 round, no spoil & Adjacent unless Scenario is specifically set to some thing which do not need 50 rounds to go & may quickly finish even round limit is 50

Yes on both things.

Scenario is set to 50 rounds but they rarely go that long. My experience is that one team or the other gets the advantage quickly and they are over by Turn 12 or 13.

And yes, you are correct. One key allows a maximum score of 7, two keys allow a maximum score of 14, etc.

People should get double or triple rewards for winning as Central Powers. I'm in three games...two as Central Powers (will be quick losses) and one as Allies (will be an easy win).

Central Powers do need perfect play and good luck. Allies can win with either good play or good luck.

Do you have any suggestions for how to make it more balanced while keeping the overall idea intact?

Yeah, it looks like an NR is one of the 8 requests. NRs are not allowed to play scenario games. It shouldn't let him request something he can't play. I'll write to the webmaster; this should be a simple fix.

We had a similar problem a few months ago when foes were allowed to request games but couldn't join them. That was solved, but of course not in time to change the situation for the monthly challenge. I'm confident this will be solved too, but obviously not in 3 days, so in the meantime we'll just have to wait for someone else to request.
