At least Iran are looking good to make it to the knockouts over USA, that'll be funny.

It was such a battle when they met in World Cup 1998. This one should be even more intense because it's a fight for a progress to the next round. In 1998, their match was the second one played and their chances were too slim, and it was still a battle overshadowed by politics.

I suppose that ralph agrees that he is wrong again.

Politics is definitely involved. In 2010, Angola was preparing to host the African Cup of Nations; and while Togo national team were on their way there, they were attacked by rebels who wanted to control a certain province. That incident brought the entire world's attention to that political issue. Speaking for myself, I never heard of that issue, but now I still remember the incident and the name of that province - Cabinda. Football is a very good way and tool to make yourself noticeable and heard.

Don't forget the Olympics of 1972! That was politics in its purest form.

Mexico lost to Argentina 2-0

I have never seen where GEOGRAPHICALLY, Central America is part of South America. Perhaps culturally, since many of the 7 nations of Central America speak Spanish, they may be closer to much of South America ethnically and politically, but they are a diverse set of 7 small nations.

As far as the question of Costa Rica and Central America, let me cite these sources:

North America, the third-largest continent, extends from the tiny Aleutian Islands in the northwest to the Isthmus of Panama in the south. The continent includes the enormous island of Greenland in the northeast and the small island countries and territories that dot the Caribbean Sea and western North Atlantic Ocean. In the far north, the continent stretches halfway around the world, from Greenland to the Aleutians. But at Panama’s narrowest part, the continent is just 50 kilometers (31 miles) across.

North America’s physical geography, environment and resources, and human geography can be considered separately.

North America can be divided into five physical regions: the mountainous west, the Great Plains, the Canadian Shield, the varied eastern region, and the Caribbean. Mexico and Central America’s western coast are connected to the mountainous west, while its lowlands and coastal plains extend into the eastern region.

https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/north-america-physical-geography

Central America is the southernmost region of North America.
Central America consists of 7 countries: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.
The United States is the biggest trading partner of the countries in Central America.
The U.S. dollar can be used as a form of currency in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama.

The BBC are more concerned about the banning of the rainbow armband than the football. Let's face facts, 99% of footballers that wear the rainbow armband do so because they'd be called a bigoted homophobe if they refused. Nobody really has freedom of choice here but I agree with the Muslims. Its pretty close as both sides peddle mental illness but the Muslims are right in this case.

Yes, it was a good game and very close to being tied. I was on the edge of my seat and very nervous for most of the game.

USA missed a few chances to score MORE and did so ONCE, but it was ruled Off-sides and I only saw on replay and the announcers said it was very close. As I recall, they basically agreed with the call.

Iran had chances to tie as they went into a more offensive mode and the USA did not counter effectively, at least not to my satisfaction.

Injuries to two key players, especially the goal scorer Pulisic, may be serious.

Odds to win World Cup 2022 Qatar

The latest World Cup odds for November 30, 2022 have Brazil as the favorite to win, with Spain, England, and France not so far behind. The first round of group-stage games had a couple shocking results with Saudi Arabia upsetting Argentina and Japan edging out Germany, but some of the favorites have since reestablished themselves.

The US goal score, Pulisic, is nicknamed Captain America.

Analysis: Captain America Pulisic puts body on the line to punish cautious Iran

Christian Pulisic of the U.S. collides with Iran's Alireza Beiranvand after he scores their first goal REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach

DOHA, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Christian Pulisic has had a season to forget for Chelsea but in the blue shirt of his beloved United States he scored the goal that gave them their first win at the 2022 World Cup and a spot in the last-16 at the expense of political rivals Iran.

Pulisic, who became the most expensive American player in 2019 when Chelsea signed him for 64 million euros ($66.09 million), has yet to set the Premier League on fire and has scored only one goal this season.

(...)

But true to his 'Captain America' nickname, the Chelsea forward attempted to soldier on after receiving treatment and the U.S. contingent in the stadium reserved their loudest cheer when he jogged back on to the pitch.

also, same article:

FROSTY RELATIONS
Four decades of frosty relations between the two countries after the U.S. cut diplomatic ties in 1980 overshadowed the Group B fixture as the politics surrounding the game created a stifling atmosphere in Doha.

Berhalter and captain Tyler Adams had dealt with a verbal volley of questions from Iranian journalists at their pre-match press conference on topics ranging from the U.S. Navy's presence in the Persian Gulf to discrimination back in the States.

Both men were undeterred, however, and answered each question with grace and humility without raising tensions in the room ahead of one of the most politically-charged matches of the tournament.

Best team simply chose not to. We didn't want to make Pulisic get desperate and injure his penis trying to equalise, although he went and did that against Iran anyway so so much for our charitable gesture.

Germany and Belgium both going out at group stage is mad. Shame Cost Rica couldn't hold on to knock Spain out too but the knockout rounds have some interesting teams getting through to them now. Maybe Belgium and Germany should've spent the build up working on their passing instead of whining about politics.

England should mash up Senegal but after that their likely fixtures are France then Spain then Brazil, as things stand. Pretty tough route, but thankfully we're talking about a country full of people with some imperial fibre and work ethic going up against some lazy Latin types so the odds definitely aren't too bad.
