I remember stories from my old man of his days growing up in the depression. My grandfather meeting my grandmother in Chicago both immigrants from Yugoslavia. My dad and his siblings born there and eventually relocated to Los Angeles in the 30's. My dad remembered as a child first moving to Los Angeles the family renting a home with a black family. Back then every one just wanted to get by and have food on the table and a roof over their heads. Once my grandparents were able to they bought a house and back then the neighborhoods had few houses. Like my grandparents, people were growing their own food(and producing their own alcohol) and raising some farm animals to supplement their food source. Once a month my grandparents would invite people over from the neighborhood and they would bring what they could in the way of food. They would get the jug of wine out and the harmonicas and start playing and singing American folk songs and Slav songs because that at the time was their entertainment. At my grandfathers funeral I'll always remember a gentleman walking up too my dad and saying, "You know Nick, those were hard times back then but your dad always welcomed anyone to his house and he always had something to eat for us." A lot of people come to this country to get away from from the turmoil of their home countries. And I think we take a lot of things for granted here.

Christopher B. Stubblefield.

I'm excited I can buy some sauces and rubs made from his excellent recipes.

Nutrition Facts labels.

Though this is a story of not reading it before chowing down.

I like them and figured they are a pretty good veggie snack. I was at the halal foods store and decided to grab the giant can this time. 1.9kg of CEDAR PHOENICIA stuffed vine leaves.

They are literally leaves wrapped around rice and herbs, kind of a small cabbage roll sort of thing. Turns out they are also 220 calories for a serving of three. :|

The can has about 22 in it, so I have just bought roughly 1,613 calories worth.

I guess I will freeze bags of five and spread them out.

The ones with garlic and jalapeƱos inside are great. Not for the timid.

I like the stuffed olives too. Either garlic or jalepeno. If someone goes to the fort, (superstore) I believe they have jalapeƱo stuffed PC brand. Ever watch that show called Superstore, it has one of the guys from Kids in the Hall, it's pretty funny.

Before the "new normal" you could get them from the bulk bars. Now you have to buy them in jars. Probably better hygienically.

So I just bagged those stuffed vine leaves. Looks like when they wrote 22 on the can, they meant 22 servings, multiply that by three. Yeah there were around 66 of them in there.

So around 4,840 calories. Good times.

Update : We need a bigger boat. My little 12 foot aluminum one can't be commuting us to Van to get gallon pails if olives.

I was given a bottle of Roasted Raspberry Chipotle Sauce which I used 2 ways.

Poured it on pork tenderloin.

Poured it on Philadelphia Cream cheese then put on multigrain crackers. Huge hit.

I found 4.61 acres near Island Park Idaho for $39,000us.

I might prefer something closer to those crackers that is not buried in snow right now. Plus I suspect the shrimp trapping in Idaho is not-productive.

Ask your grocer about Unico and Mezzetta brand JalapeƱo stuffed Olives llama.

I probably have. Let me google and see where it is.

Update : I don't believe I have been there. Looks like they have a nice clean olive bar that they would fill those little plastic containers with. Might have to go scope it out.

Seamless cans.

The grape vine leaves come in a tin can wth a soldered seem.

Bush baked beans come in a pressed can with a liner and no seam. Keeps contaminants and air out of the product better.

Cows have rumps.

Unlike Canada, where they have "hips":

We should start protesting outside Ottawa: Bring Back Rumps!

My favourite - what the Brits call 'nappy cream' ( i.e. the stuff you put on baby's behind to stop a rash) is in the US "Butt Paste".

One thing I learned as a single father -- all those creams, regardless of name, are worthless. The one sure-fire cure for diaper rash is throw the kids in a bubble bath. All kids, regardless of political affiliation, love to play in bubble bath, and it clears up diaper rash 100% of the time. Cheap, essentially effortless, 100% effective, and they actually like it. 4 wins.

Pretty much singularly responsible for all the care of my two boys (23 and 17 now) and never heard either of those terms

Course, it's been a while since diaper days

Think the few times we had to use it we referred to it as Diaper Rash Cream....very original.
