The Cell V1.0

43 countries.

Areas of Interest:
1. I'd like the 3 centrioles to start neutral with 4 armies each, leaving 40 countries that can divide evenly among several player numbers
2. I only have a single one-way attack route so far - should there be additional routes?
3. I used the available calculators on the foundry for continent bonuses although they seemed a bit high to me, I've taken about 1-2 armies off those estimates per continent.
4. Army circles are 22 pixels wide

Thanks for the feedback!

This needs to start out in Map Ideas. It looks like a nice map though.

Lots of potential, dont give this one up.

oh balls. i was hoping to do this map after NYC.
ah well...you snooze, you lose.
this isn't at all how i would approach a map of the cell.
is this a eukaryotic cell? what type specifically is it, and why does it have a flagellum? makes it look like a bacterium, and it's technically a one-way...i don't see why it would connect to the cilia.
i dunno, i hate to be so negative in response to your first post. but i've been thinking about this for a while, and i think this could be so much better.
one suggestion, which wouldn't really work with what you've got, is to include the cytoplasm, and break it up into a bunch of territories.
that is, after all, how things get around in the cell.
also, half the reason for making this map would be to make people memorize the term "endoplasmic reticulum."

thats a cool looking map. i might actually learn the parts of a cell playing this, seeing as how i never did in high school

'E.R.' should be spelled out then. I loved that term in school, especially with the addition 'with ribosomes', and the whole thing in Dutch, in which the first word is even longer ('endoplasmatisch'). Maybe that is why I ended up in university getting a degree in molecular cell biology. Benny, I agree with you fully: great idea, but could be a lot better still, I share your opinions on possible improvements. I am sure Rabbits will appreciate your feedback. Maybe you two can work together on this?

I like the idea - I'm with Benny tho - if this is done - let's get him and jasnostj to ensure accuracy is complete...

Also - you may want to look into antialiasing that sphere...

Thanks for moving the map to the appropriate subforum gimil!

I'm glad that people are interested in this map. It seems like so far one of the main suggestions is to make this map more technical.

I originally envisioned this to be a stylized, fictional, and fun version of a cell diagram, it certainly isn't accurate even at a cartoon level of resolution! My personal preference for maps on CC is ones that have good gameplay and are still nice to look at after a few dozen times you've played them. A quick survey of current maps in play shows that many maps are stylized or completely fictional versions of things.

That being said, I'm very open to making this more biologically accurate if people think that it will be more appealing to the players of CC. As you can see it is pretty crowded as it is, so if I were to spell out "endoplasmic reticulum" (I agree, totally cool name!) and distinguish between smooth and rough (ribosome bound) versions, what are some ideas for fitting those details in? Smaller fonts? Also, I considered splitting the nuclear and cellular cytoplasm into territories but again ran into the crowding problem, so that is why i'm relying on the army circles to designate territories more than the artwork, any suggestions about incorporating those things for you guys?

Cheers,

WR

One potential way of resolving any concerns about accuracy is to consider the armies you drop onto the map every turn as parasitic viruses. They replicate within the host or are attracted to its outer boundaries looking for a route in. That would also explain, say, the unnatural process of something within a lysosome attacking a flagellar motor complex ... it's not that unreasonable considering that viruses break a lot of "the rules" in real life too.

Not quite. That is a DNA map, not a cell map.

very true...there are limitless ways of approaching this.
i thought maybe players could be attacking the cell...
or maybe more than one cell...

i would love to help, and i certainly don't want to hijack what you've got.
i'll try to post something more substantial when i've got some time.

first suggestion change it to 42 terrs....much better generic number
lots of maps have that number but lots of potential here

Thanks for the suggestion lord voldemort -

I'm not sure, did you mean 42 territories total or 42 territories that are player-controlled (not neutral) from the start?

By my calculations, 40 player-controlled territories from the start gives even numbers for 2,4,5,8 players, which would divide evenly for a greater number of team games than having 39 or 42 player-controlled territories.

*note that I'd like the centrioles (3 territories) to start neutral*

The Cell V2

Postby Wooden Rabbits on Fri Feb 22, 2008 5:59 pm

Thanks to everyone for the helpful feedback! Here is "The Cell" V2
-WR

51 Territories
8 Continents

Major Changes:
1. Added 8 new "cytoplasmic" territories - bringing the total to 51 territories (3 Centrioles would remain neutral at start leaving 48 player-controlled territories)
2. Added another one-way attack into the Lysosome
3. Lysosome continent bonus increased to +4
4. Two new key attack routes connecting Centrioles #1 and #2, and E.R. to Centriole #3

Minor Changes:
1. Outer cell sphere rendered in finer detail
2. Resized and repositioned some continent and territory labels

why a new thread for this update
Don't now why people on here don't like being cooks, remember under siege: A former SEAL, now cook, is the only person who can stop a gang of terrorists when they sieze control of a US Navy battleship.

Biology class has come back to haunt me

it hurts me, it hurts me!

lol. Interesting map, but try to make it a bit artistic. Right now it has that bland "i copied this straight from a biology textbook" feel.
What program are you making this image with?

shouldn't that be exactly the look the map should try to have?

Either you try to do something 'realistic' which is probably impossible, or you try to do something a textbook would do. It's probably close to what mapmakers do here anyway. They split up sections by colour to make it easier for people to distinguish between sections.

Yes, I agree with you.

On another note, isn't this a second thread for the same map?
