There's no real comparison between Ferguson and Mourinho, as Jose has only managed around 600 games, compared to Alex's 2,500 games over 35 years. Jose's win percentage is around 63% and Ferguson's is 58%. Jose has never gone 12 months without winning at least one trophy. In my opinion, what Jose has done in just one decade is pretty damned impressive, and the teams he managed were not your Real Madrids or Man Utds...
- After his very brief 9 game spell then resignation at Benfica he went on to manage União de Leiria, whom he took to their highest-ever league finish of fifth place, breaking club records along the way.
- He then went on to manage Porto, breaking league records as well as winning everything with them - the CL, UEFA Cup, League, and Portugese Cup.
- Then he mosied into England and with Abramovich's huge financial backing, transformed a little London team called Chelsea into a footballing superpower within the space of 18 months. He took Chelsea to several titles, breaking several English records along the way.
- Internazionale were next on his list, as he took Italy by storm, destroying opponents and setting even more records. Several league and cup wins, as well as a second CL title.
- Now he's at Real Madrid, the only team who can hold a torch to the current team of Barcelona, and he has already equaled and broken club records.
Is he "The Special One"? Maybe. If he can do it for 35+ years like Ferguson, definitely.
Joshy, you are right. Mourinho is a great coach. I can't disagree with this, but I think the comparison is invalid as each one has a completely different policy/philosophy.
Mourinho is the kind of managers who can win ya top titles; however, he costs your club too much money!
Real Madrid have spent like 500 millions during the past couple of years to be the team who can match Barcelona. Mourinho did the same at Inter.. spent too much to win the CL. Serie A doesn't count because anyone could win it with Inter at that time; though he almost lost it to Roma.
Media and average viewers are usually reluctant to see a bit beyond the obvious surface! Mourinho is best know as the manager who knows how to buy in the market, which explains why he is much stronger in his second season with any club. That was clear with Inter when he brought 5 players, with 4 of them turned out to be amazing and made the difference. However, media just ignored the fact that he did some shitty deals at Real Madrid. Nori shahin and Sami Khdera are good examples!
I still believe he's the man who can win you anything if you gave him full power and hundreds of millions. Though he wouldn't bother with a long-term building up in his club. On the other hand, Managers like Wenger and Ferguson are more like business managers than football club managers with their wise spending policies that depends on keeping the cash flow even though that can be at the cost of titles and achievements. If football was fair enough and oil tycoons didn't put their big moneys in the game, we'd see a very different competition where Wenger's likes would definitely rock!
One more thing about Mourinho, almost everytime he leaves a club, that club just start sucking hard because it just stop the reckless spending policy carried out during the Special One days.
