Dancing Mustard needs your help

Postby Dancing Mustard on Mon Oct 06, 2008 7:30 am

Dear all,

I've decided to start work on a grand Risk-related project. But I'm fairly new to this 'foundry' shennanigan and I could to with a little bit of help.

(1)
To get me started, can anybody direct me to the largest known image of the World 2.1 Map. The bigger and higher res the image, the better.

I found this: http://zims.com/blog/images/vfv10large.png
But I wanted to know if there was a bigger and/or better version that I could lay my hands on. Always best to get started on the right foot, etc etc.

(2)
For editing graphics (i.e. adding in a better ocean colour /effect, bobbing on new territories, changing territory names, editing boundries/borders) which program would you people recommend (preferably free or cheaply available, nudge nudge wink wink)?

I'm not running a stellar PC here, but I'm not entirely without tech... so y'know, that might be a factor in your deciscions.

Thanks in advance people.

For programs I would suggest Photoshop, but if your looking for free (and legal) then GIMP, which just came out with V.2.6 (sadly, Im stuck with 2.4)

Dancing Mustard? In the Foundry? What is this world coming to! :o

I agree with bryguy: most of us use Photoshop, some use Gimp, and Cairnswk swears by Fireworks. Whatever you use make sure it is layers-based, so once you have an element looking the way you want it to you don't have to mess it up to change everything else.

And for the record, if you're planning on posting a draft of a potential map soon you're in the right place... otherwise this should either be in either Ideas or Discussion.

Sensible advice indeed. Am I right in thinking that GIMP is indeed layers based (somebody once said it was a freebie version of photoshop, so I'm half-assuming that it is)?

Well we'll see how I get on I guess... I've no idea how succesful my forray into map-editing will be.

That said, if you felt like shunting me into discussion/ideas, then you'd probably be making the right call.

Yes GIMP is layers based. Inkscape is another one you might choose, but in that one its a little confusing cause it has layers inside of layers. It also isnt as good as GIMP or Photoshop.

Qwert crackes me up.

Do you have an awesome talent in art? I have GIMP myself though I just don't seem to posses the artistic skill needed to make a map. It's harder than I thought.
