This game is about spelling, but there's a catch. The game starts when a player names a later. Each of the other players must add another letter, in sequence, with the following restrictions : the sequence must always be capable of spelling a legal (and, by legal, I mean in an English dictionary) word, but can never complete that word.
Play proceeds in a round robin fashion, each player adding one letter at a time to the end of the sequence. If the player before you adds a letter which makes the sequence illegal (that is, a sequence which cannot spell any legal word), you may challenge, and the player before you must name a word which the sequence can spell. If they name a legal word, the challenging player loses and is eliminated from the game; if they do not, then the challenged player loses and is eliminated. Also, if the player before you accidentally spells a word, you may call "word" and the player before you is eliminated. You may only challenge or call "word" on your turn, and only against the player immediately before you in the rotation.
Once a player is eliminated, the player immediately after them in the rotation starts a new sequence; play continues until only one player remains.
The final rule is that any word which has been previously spelled in the game does not count as a word in subsequent rounds; this allows for more interesting game play, if, for instance, someone were to accidentally spell 'be' or something similar in early rounds.
Edit : At Fircoal's suggestion, I'm adding the "words of 4 letters or less don't count" rule, since it will also make things more interesting.
Edit 2 : At further consideration, I'll add the "5 lives" rule as well; each time a player loses a challenge, they'll get a letter added to their name on the player list (spelling "ghost"); once they've lost 5 times, they're out. I'm iffy on this, though; since this won't be real-time, the five lives rule might make things take forever.
This is a little complicated, so I'll give an example of game play (suppose there are three players) :
Player 1 :
t
Player 2 :
th
PLayer 3 :
thi
(Note: Had player 3 said the letter 'e', he would have lost, since that spells 'the' which is a valid English word.)
Player 1 :
thir
Player 2 :
thirx
Player 3 :
Challenge!
(At this point, player 2 loses and is out of the game, since there are no valid words which begin "thirx".)
Any number of players can sign up, but this usually works best with 5-10. Post if you're interested. I'll start things off once we get enough interest.
