New Policy For Map Ideas

Postby Coleman on Wed Sep 26, 2007 10:09 am

There are a lot of topics that should be in the suggestions topic that are being made their own topics.

I'd like to start moving them into there and deleting any replys made to them before I notice it isn't a map topic. I'll send a pm to the original author of the idea explaining what happened to it so they don't keep remaking it or anything.

I'd like to know if the general foundry community supports this or not before I start arbitrarily doing it.

(PS. I'm also wanting to start locking down topics that turn abandoned. I've already been doing this, but if people think that's dumb then I can stop.)

I like the idea. Clean it up and polish it up so its easier to go through and see what is happening.

I never liked the idea thread.

I prefer one topic per idea. If the idea sucks it will die a natural death. If it's good it survives. No need to waste time with a moderator version of unnatural selection.

Having all the ideas in the idea threads sucks for the following reasons.

1. Good ideas get lost to lots of bad ideas
2. No continuity to discuss good ideas
3. I'd say that thread gets less views than a single topic thread.

Agreed. Most of the posts in the general idea thread is "I think *Map A* would be cool" with little, if any, development of an idea. In a thread, an idea might be able to go someplace.

It also seem to choke out any good ideas that come for it

i prefer if the ideas got its own thread. like mibi said, if its good, then a discussion can continue and if it sucks, then it will die naturally without any effort by a mod.

throwing all ideas in the ideas post makes ideas clustered and its hard to really discuss a good idea among all the bad ones.

I agree Map ideas is flooded,

Although It would be nice maybe to have a
REVAMPS Only Subforum or maybe a
MAP DISCUSSIONS Subforum...For the XML or Map Size Topics, Basically the Who, What, Where Why & How...

Well, the current idea, or at least the concept for map ideas was as follows.

A topic would indicate that the creator intends to make the map he's asking about.

The suggestions topic that we have stickied was for people who didn't intend to make the maps suggest what they would like to see.

We've kind of gotten away from that, this poll was just to see if people minded as much as I did. I don't like doing my own thing and having the whole community yell at me.

As for wither or not we should even have the map ideas sub-forum, that's probably best left for the foundry process revamp topic. :)

I'm going to start cleaning what I see from now on. It probably won't happen very fast at first. I'll keep this topic open in case people want to say more about it.

just change the title of the Map Ideas Thread to

IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO MAKE THE MAP YOURSELF THEN POST YOUR IDEA HERE

It wouldn't help at all probably, but at least it would probably make some people laugh or smile.

i don't mind a new idea having its own thread. Some ideas are worthy of discussion even if there isn't a working map, and having a single thread for all of them doesn't facilitate discussion. The thread is fine if somebody just wants to throw an idea to the crowd and hope somebody picks it up, but some ideas need more.

What sucks is that legitimate new map threads have to sink under the weight of all of the other crap for so long. But rather than killing discussion around ideas I'd like to see faster promotion for map threads that actually:
1. follow the posting guidelines
2. have a map and demonstrate an ability/willingness to update
3. spark discussion other than "my eyes! my eyes!" and
4. have a plan in terms of game play and how the image will progress.

The "heating" phase shouldn't require anything more than promise.

And can somebody please add the New Map Guidelines to the Map Ideas sub-forum? Most new maps don't even have basic info like # of territories.

Well... I need an obvious line somewhere, I can't just arbitrarily decide what is worthy of discussion when the first poster doesn't intend to make the map themselves. :-k

In the ideas forum have stickies for people with ideas but no desire to make them.

There could be several stickies based on type of map idea
*Geography idea
*Historical battle idea
*Fantasy Idea
*Abstract Idea
*??
You get the idea :D

Then the rest of the posts are for people who have ideas and want to make maps.

If it is followed (cross fingers) then the ideas forum will get much cleaner and the ideas will be categorized better.

I was thinking something different, but that idea could work too.

Anyway, my thinking is that once an idea shows promise, is being updated, and has progression then it should be stickied. This way the good ideas are always at the top.

I think we may be going with the sticky idea. Then people can just post their ideas as topics all they want, we'll just turn the ones becoming maps into stickies until they are ready to move.
