one thing about these escalating games is that a player can essentially move on to the next round by playing not to win the game. i guess this adds an additional element of strategery to the mix, but it is kind of a loop-hole (though a valid interpretation of the rules as they currently stand). as an example, player x can just deploy every round and not attack to obtain a card thus making himself an undesirable target; because, in my opinion, cards are probably a (or the) key to winning an escalating game. as an undesirable target (i.e., without cards), player x can basically set himself up to be one of the last four remaining players in a majority of the games he is in. i'm not sure if others think this is an issue, but this practice could be attenuated by putting more emphasis on a win than 2nd-4th place. from a mathematical standpoint i don't know how complex this would need to be, but if there was a scale like 12-3-2-1 for 1st-4th place respectively this might punish those who essentially don't play to win the game and reward those who do play to win.

That's part of the tournament... it's late in the game to introduce a different scoring structure because i'm sure that there have been some people who have followed your strategy... I have witnessed cadets become majors during this tournament yet they will not move on because of their tournament points....

still need to go after a number of wins regardless as the cost of points in "losing" each game is too high ...

This has been discussed at length in MBII to check out the discussion click on the link below
Map Blaster II: The Redemption

I'll boil it down if you do not have the time to read it
1. Scoring will remain the same
2'. It is a legit strategy to not take cards so that you are undesirable to take out
This strategy will not get you to the final round (if you look at the track record of the players reaching the final round none of them have used the strategy to get there. they were all very aggressive and smart with there moves)

I have more thoughts on the subject bit it's to late to think about tonight

Score it like the sets are awarded:
1st: 20
2nd: 15
3rd: 12
4th: 10
5th: 8
6th: 6
7th: 4
8th: 0

The higher score for winning should drive people to try to win, rather than just hang on. I understand you can't implement the change for this round -- although I'd love to see the numbers -- but you might consider it for following rounds, or at least for future tourneys.

I've got to say, the same thought crossed my mind... And surely thats part of the tournament... there have been games where I might have cashed a set early, knowing I wont win, but with only one card left and loads of armies, I am sure to probably come second last and get seven points...
Maybe there should just be extra points for the winner. Though the idea above of scoring it like the cards in an escalating game isn't a bad plot either...

I have done exactly this to stay in the round...believe me placement will be vital in future rounds I missed the MBII final round by only 2 points and I know there were several plays that I made that if I would not have i would have made it. Sorry folks but for this tourney scoring will remain the same. Win I get closer to MBV we can talk about any scoreing changes then

Just thought I would say that I don't think that there is any thing wrong with the scoring system. If someone is using the strategy of not getting card so they last longer then you as the eliminator have to decided if you should attack for cards or points. I think it adds a bit to the stratagy of the game. I like it
