I just had a thought...

Post by whitestazn88 »

will there ever come a day when we can't think of any new maps to make?

for example... at some point, every possible geographic map will be made, i'm assuming. when new xml features are added, like conditionals, will people be allowed to make the same map again with just one added gameplay feature????

and will you cartos still be able to come up with new gameplay fantasy worlds and ideas that will be refreshing?

i know its a little depressing, but what if it does happen?

Geography maps are already slowing down. Almost all of the major reigons of the world have been covered, and many smaller reigons also, some of them done multiple times. I'm guessing that real world geography will be the first section of maps to stop getting new submissions, but that won't be for another year or two, I'm guessing.

Fantasy maps with unique gameplay will continue to grow, as long as XML continues to expand to allow the new unique maps.

I don't think mapmaking will die out any time soon. As geography maps slow down, more fantasy and abstract maps will come in to take their place. We're already starting to see that now, just a little bit.

I'm not worried about the map foundry running out of ideas any time soon. Its got at least a few more years of life in it.

You had a thought? That's a first.

Also, we will never run out of maps. If worst comes to worst we will just keep churning out really shit ones but we will never stop unless lack calls it or something.

oh man, you're so funny firth....

but in a serious response to your post, you really think we'll allow shit maps to get created? the foundry is around for a reason.

No. Just because you can't see what could possibly be created doesn't mean the options are so limited. That's why they call it an "idea" and not, I don't know, some word that doesn't connote originality.

And originality will never stop being original.

geographic maps will not fizzle out like you guys are saying

there's always going to be something new people can do or they can take an existing map like China and do it in a different way from the current one.

theoretically, every country in the world could have a map.

I like puget sound. Lots of others do to.
If you don't like the maps that are being created, why don't you post some suggestions in their threads instead of complain about them after they are finished?

there are definitely some maps that could be improved, but thats why we do revamps on some of the older stuff...

as for the new maps you might not like... you don't have to play them, and there are some that i do not, but they're not bad in any way that i can think of....

all i'm saying is... i don't wanna have to end up playing 15 different kinds of china maps in the future.... what if thats what it comes down to though?

It won't. Think about all the ways you can do real geography.

You can do a continent. OK, there are 7 of those, I believe Antarctica is the only one left.

You can do a region. TONS of those we haven't done.

You can do a city.

And then there are the battles, wars, campaigns. Islands. Archipelagos. Maps with funky themes (take Extreme Global Warming as an example).

And that's JUST with geographic maps.

No, the Foundry will never run out of ideas, just like the human race will never run out of ideas for new novels, movies, etc.

My thought is how the website will handle the many maps that will eventually be made available.

I guess they'll eventually end up dividing the "Start A Game" into a series of sections: Fantasy, Real World, History (or Wars and Battles), etc. ;)

We'll never run out of possible maps, no way. And with increasing options with XML updates, the conceptual "reach" of map ideas can only increase in kind.

As for the Start a Game thing (as well as Game Finder), there have been several suggested sorting mechanisms to make it easier to find what you want, particularly as the number of maps increase. I'm sure Lack's got one of them on the drawing board for future updates.

there could be catagories like that for join, start, and game finder. There could be Fantasy, Historical, New, Favorites, Geographical, etc

but thats off topic...

hopefully we will never run out of maps. As long as people have ideas, there should be maps
