Africa

Post by Industrial Helix »

Ok, I think Africa is seriously underrepresented on this map and there's a lot of potential to get some good maps out of the countries and history there. So just a quick few questions,

If you could pick an African state currently in existence to be a map on CC, what would it be?

If you could pick a former African based empire/kingdom to be a map on CC, what would you pick?

If you could pick a region of Africa to be a map, what would you pick?

My three:
South Africa or Nigeria
Zulu Kingdom
Horn of Africa

You could also do an Africa as it was once controlled by European Empires. But perhaps Eastern Hemisphere map already does that... to a macro extent at least.

It would be nice to zoom in on certain regions. So many features of the landscape can come into play: desert, dense jungle, hilly terrain, snakes ( :P ), etc.

Well, I'm thinking that africa has no approach from an indigenous base. Everything is from a european standpoint. While European colonialism is very important, I think the actual african kingdoms and what not could make for some awesome maps. Like the Zulu or Asante kingdoms.

As for Africa as a whole divided by kingdoms, personally I'm not all that interested in making that map myself but would enjoy playing it, I think.

No one has any interest in maps based on current african states?

Oh yeah I agree with you 100%. I was raising possibilities in addition to the ones you pointed out. Lots of potential in such a large and diverse continent.

Well, how about Nigeria?

I quote the Wikipedia:

"Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a federal constitutional republic comprising thirty-six states and one Federal Capital Territory."

Sounds like there is a lot of potential there...

There is definitely space for more maps of Africa.

Lol, the first map idea I proposed was Angola, but I didn't realy know about how anything worked so I didn't actualy make it. I've always liked africa, dunno why. Perhaps the early bantu civilization?

Might be a little too political (and fluid) to touch, but a present-day Horn of Africa map would have a variety of possibilities.

1) Somalia, by itself, has enough divisions (potentially with capital bonuses) to make for a nice map. You could even have "super-bonuses," like with World 2.1, for holding all Somaliland, Islamist, or Government-allied territories. This is a decent map to see the possibilities from: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... tricts.png

2) Whether just a Somalia map or a map of the entire Horn, there could, of course, be a pirate component. Plenty of ports could be used, plus off-shore boat territories.

3) If it's a Horn map, you've got the dynamic of the recent Ethiopia/Eritrea conflict to work with.

I think we've definitely got a niche still available for Africa based maps.

oh, totally... i always wondered why there weren't more maps based on this geographically diverse and amazing region of the world. speaking of, i just watched a show on south america, and had no idea that chile had one of the largest deserts in the world, the second largest concentration of mammals, second to africa, and one of the most diverse eco-systems in the world (hell, just read an article about 450lb sea lions roaming the streets of some of their towns doing as they please). GASP FOR AIR. my point is, i agree... africa is an untouched map resource on CC, and it could be amazing if people started putting things together...-0

p.s.-by people, i don't mean me. i just want to bitch about the maps after they are out of the foundry and into BETA.. JOKING!!!

Rorke's Drift...mmhm, I'm thinking Michael Caine in Zulu. ;) I like the idea.

I'm completely agree with the need for new Africa maps. I'd love to base a tournament around various Africa maps, with Africa itself as the final map. I've already run a small one of these, but at the time there were only the Egypt maps and Africa. Now we have Madagascar, but it doesn't exactly make for a decent-sized tournament.

The USA map pack has proved hugely popular - any thoughts on an African equivalent?

Failing that, I love the Zulu/tribe/etc ideas, and wikipedia shows various African empires if people wanted to go down that route
Important Tournament Notice

The data for ALL of my tournaments has potentially been lost. I am working to recover it but as I am away on business all of this week, there will be some delay. Sincere apologies.

Hmm.

Maghreb, Sahara, Horn, Gulf of Guinea/West Africa, Sub-Sahara, Southern Africa.

Six pretty good regions to work with. You might be onto something.

Well, speaking of the Africa map... i really hate it. I want to say it needs a revamp, but I dunno if its that bad. I think even a reorganized Africa map would be quite cool.

How about an ancient Carthage map? What else.... hmmmm: if someone wants to do another WWII map, Algeria/Libya could be expanded upon. A Nile Basin map, longest river in the world might have some merit, countries, ports, waterways, something along those lines. Could also look to maps with a more geologic flare, Great Rift Valley and the many volcanoes on East Africa. Does seem to be some possibilities there.

World war one had a pretty large African campaign. Perhaps that would be goo, but is anyone going to actualy make one, or are we all sort of just giving suggestions to no one?

Right now it looks like maybe suggestions to no one. Perhaps someone new should try to take a stab at making one of these maps? :)

Just a thought But what about doing a continental map with the different Empires represented. the Zulus in the south. The Egyptians in the NE. Carthage in the NW and the Mali in the West Include the Congo as your 5th. Could be a lot of fun

There have been some projects about African countries that have been abandoned... it might be worth looking at them to see if any can be restarted. South Africa wasn't my favorite map ever, but it had some promise. Meanwhile I would encourage folks to stay away from Egypt/the Nile - it's been done to death.

The Zulu idea could be interesting... anybody come across an example of what this might look like?

One concern that was raised about a recent attempt at an African country is that regions that have experienced recent war or genocide might be a bit too emotionally or politically charged to represent tastefully.

Interesting idea, but what would a map of the Sahara look like?
