A LITTLE HELP PLEASE

Post by Major_Pain »

I am new to the game & have just played 4 games so far but i have read all the rules/game options at least twice over & am still stuck wit queries in the following 2 areas:

The 1st is about how the no. of troops to be allocated is decided. Like it seems to be pretty clear that it is 1 troop for every 3 regions held + whatever bonuses (which I understand). But wat happens if one has 13 or 14 regions? At wat stage if any is the no. rounded up?
And if one is playing a sequential game, do they have to hold the regions till their next go comes around again or just till the end of the round?

The 2nd area that confuses me is the whole area of Spoils. I understand the differences between Flat rate & Unlimited etc but I just don't understand what the following means & when/how u can cash them in:
"My Spoils ([bracketed] if owned, next set worth 4 troops): SpoilsNairobi "

If anyone can help me clear up these 2 issuses, then my enjoyment of the game would be greatly enhanced. :)

Thanks in advance,
Major_Pain

12 terts = 4
15 terts = 5
18 terts = 6
21 terts = 7 etc...

Spoils. If you own them they get an extra 2 dropped on that tert when you cash them.
Flat rate: red set (3) is worth 4
green set: worth 6
Blue set: worth 8
mixed set: (1 each green - blue - red) worth 10.

Escalating spoils the value goes up with each cash regardless of the set turned in.

The income you get is determined at the beginning of your own turn, both in freestyle and in sequential. This means that you have to hold the regions till the beginning of your next turn. Otherwise, the player going last in a sequential game would have a tremendous advantage.

When determining troops due to number of territories, rounding up never happens. This means that 13 or 14 territories give you 4 armies, just like 12 territories do.

At the end of your turn, if you conquered a territory, you get a spoil. The spoils you have accumulated are listed in the line you quoted. In this case, you got exactly one spoil, which is linked to the territory Nairobi. If next turn you manage to conquer a territory, you would get another spoil, for example Sydney. This would be listed as "My Spoils ([bracketed] if owned, next set worth 4 troops): Nairobi Sydney". Each of those is written in a certain colour, either red, green or blue. That colour is relevant for when you can cash them. You cash them by turning in a group of three spoils of the same colour, or one spoil of each colour. Once you have at least three spoils of the same colour, or when you have one spoil of each colour, at the beginning of your turn the game will offer you a list of all spoils you have accumulated, with checkboxes in front of them. By selecting a legal combination of three cards (three cards of the same colour, or one card of each colour) and pressing the "turn in" button, you'll get the extra troops as described by JefJef. If you only own 3 or 4 spoils, you have the option of pressing the "later" button, which means you don't turn in your spoils this turn. If you own 5 spoils, you don't have this option.

It is also relevant to point out that when you eliminate someone, you get their spoils. If this would bring your total number of spoils at 5 or higher, you have to do a midturn cash, where you trade in spoils for troops, place those troops, and then continue your turn. Because of this, in multiplayer escalating games especially, it is a good strategy to set up the situation where you can turn in spoils, eliminate someone to grab their spoils, use the additional armies to eliminate someone else, which again lets you turn in spoils, which troops you can use to eliminate someone, etcetera.

Excellent & comprehensive answer there MichelSableheart & thank you as well Jejjef.

One last thing so [i think :)]

Take this example:

"My Spoils ([bracketed] if owned, next set worth 4 troops): Spoils[b:Johannesburg] Spoilsr:Manila "

Will the Manila spoil target change each go (regardless of whether i conquer it or not) or will that be my next spoil goal for the remainder of the game?

And i take it everyone has different spoil goals assigned to them?

Thanks again lads,

That particular spoil will continue to be linked to Manilla for as long as you have that spoil, regardless of whether you own the territory or not. Your next spoil will almost certainly be linked to a different territory. Other players have other spoils, which are therefore linked to different territories.

It is probably better to regard the 2 extra troops you get when you own the territory that is linked to a spoil that you cash in as a bonus, rather then considering it a goal to capture that particular territory. Most often, the losses you would incur trying to capture the territory are more then the two troops you would get in return.

You might also want to note that some maps have different rules to how many troops you get at the beginning of your turn. Like in Poker Club, the number of territories you hold is unrelated to troops due (rather it is the "hand" you hold, determined by the card number/suit of your different territories)

definitely very important to read the map details carefully
maps like feudal war also have autodeploy, which (like it suggests) automatically deploys troops on the specified terit at the start of your turn
circus maximus i recall doesn't have bonuses at all
a little care in this department can go a long way!
