Hello, I am looking for input on the concept of a map based off continents in 'World of Warcraft'. For anyone unfamiliar with the map heres the best I can find on pre-existing layouts:

Looking over the basic layouts the Blizzard company has set out in that game and being a long time player I think I could do the game justice as well as make a fairly intricate map with high mobility, fun bonuses and most importantly a fun tribute to a good game. The above link is a conglomerate of in game maps stitched together and while not too accurate, shows the basic layout and work needed to be accomplished.
I am looking for input on the copy right status as I do not know how proprietary a map is. If needed, I would also like ways to either approach the company about the map or discussion of workarounds to avoid any lawsuit. I also need to know if I am allowed to alter a pre-existing maps or does it have to be constructed from scratch. Please do note that this is my first map and I am hoping it is a success.
