Absolute Fog of war

Post by Lalloq »

Hey everybody

First, I'm sorry about my english expression. If some of you speak french, they'll see that I'm an excellent french talker :D

So, I wanted to propose an upgrade of the fog of war. An absolute fog of war, which doesn't tell players anything. No idea of the number of regions, number of reinforcements, number of regions conquered on this round...

Only these informations would be available :
PP played
QQ played
RR played
QQ has been eliminated
SS played
TT was kicked out for missing so many turns
Incrementing round 32

I don't know if it is a good idea. I wait for your reactions...

Thanks for reading and... See you in another game ! =D>

Fog does give out too much info imo.

Usually, I hate real war vs. CC war comparisons, but since that's the actual reason for the Fog of War setting's existence, I think it's appropriate here. In Fog of War games, I'd say the log info is essentially the same thing that a scout/recon would give you in a war. You'd have some estimation of army size, strength, weaponry, reinforcement routes, etc. Certainly more than "I dunno where there are. They're not here, that's for sure. They're somewhere over there...I think." Without the log info and being able to catch if an opponent is collecting on a bonus or not, the risk of being completely drop-effed in a game goes up drastically.

I agree

It seemed to me funny. Orange is near from me with 12 troops. Maybe he has a very big army far from here, but maybe these 12 troops are the last ones. Psychologically interesting, I thought. But...

can i also suggest, you dont have to look at sidestats ect....
And if the new extra heavy fog would play out, it would pay to have a tool that does make some light where others dont.. i dont see the benefit, but i do see its drawbacks

Have to agree with Sebstar and Fenrir...

Seb's discussion speaks of the various Bob and other tools available.....

Before the new CC stats change, only those people who had certain Firefox monkeywrenches had access to the information that are now shown in stats; others could identify some information by serious review of the log, but the information was still less than was available to those whose systems were capable of handling the appropriate tools.

Someone was smart enough to program a tool that read through fog before. With this Absolute setting, I can only see that same disparity between player information, which was based solely on computer capability (those operating with Linux, for example, cannot get the monkey wrenches) rather than player capabilty... without even the benefit of a log to give "some" information.

Plus, as Fenrir pointed out, the information players get in side stats is reasonable to expect commanders to send out scouts to obtain in real war settings. Those generals would have a general idea of army size and areas occupied, and although they might not be aware of all the reinforcements waiting (like spoils) they would probably know of any troops in the immediate outlying vicinity (like regular deploys based on region count) that could boost opposing forces.

Now, if we could "forbid" anyone from programming a tool that sees through this absolute fog, it might be a reasonable suggestion - but I'm not sure CC wants to go into quite that much of a dictator route, and "forbidding" will not prevent hackers anyway.

Thus, while the idea for game play is nice, I can't see it working as intended beyond the time it takes someone to program a tool to see through it.

As such, I don't support the option.

I think we should take it a step further and make it to where you can't even see your own troops if you want a full fog effect.
