Start a game if none found after search

Postby Grifter on Tue Jul 24, 2012 8:46 pm

Concise description:
If a search is done for a game using specific options and if no games are found then display a button to Start a game with the same options used for the search.
Alternative is to add a button to the "Start a Game" feature to first search games waiting for players that match the specified game type and then allow the user to create the game after the search.

Specifics/Details:
Option 1: If a player is using the Game Finder feature to look for a waiting game for a specific map with specific game options and if none are found then instead of just a message "no games found" it also shows a button to "Create a game" with the options used for the search. This will only work if specific game options are used ie. only 1 of Chained, Escalating, or Unlimited is specified.

Option 2: On the Start a Game add a button beside the "Create" to do a "Search". This works the same as the Game Finder feature except that the user has an option to create the game after the search.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • Reduces the number of duplicate games waiting for players
  • Allows a player to search for a waiting game on a specific map with specific options and if none found then create a new game with just one click.
  • Saves on number of mouse clicks. Makes it easy to join an existing game or start one if none exist.
  • Takes a great community game website and makes it even better!

This is already done.

If you try to create a game that is the same as one already made, it takes you to a screen to see if you want to join the already made game or make your own.

Sorry I didn't see that. I had done the opposite - I searched for a game, didn't find one, and then created a new game. I guess someone else had the same good idea.

Should this be implemented instead of rejected?

No, because the system works the opposite way of the suggestion. The OP wants to search for a game, and if that game does not exist, have a button to create it. Instead, the system allows you to create a game, and if that game already exists, has a button to join it.

I believe that the current system is superior (and the suggestion rightfully rejected). How often do people search for games using every, single available setting? I doubt this occurs very often. Instead, players often limit their search to a couple of settings and maybe a map choice. In order for this suggestion to have any effect in those cases, the user would then have to choose to join the game and then select the additional options. With that additional step added, I think it's better for people just to go to the Start A Game screen in the first place.
