Hello, I Just joined a couple weeks ago (saw it on Digg) and i have poked around on the forums and I didn't see a strategy section. I was looking for some basic map specific strategies as well as some comments on the maps and play types so I can choose the games I will have the most fun in. Am I just missing it or is there nothing like this organized?
Well your strategy is really based on what sort of starting position you have at the beginning of the game. If you can get a small continent in the first few turns, the troop bonus really helps. Cards can both help and hurt you, use them wisely. Pay attention to the type of game you are playing when deciding to try to take another continent or take somebody out. A common strategy on the Classic Risk map is to take Australia and defend either Indonesia or Siam. Slowly expand out from there.
the map is not that important, its the settings that matter. If you are playing a singles game there are basically two groups. no-cards and flat rate are pretty much the same, continents matter a lot. I don't like either of these setting because they often lead to alliances. If you are playing escalating then continents are of little importance and only players ranked captain and below place a high value on them. This is all I will tell you, I don't want to give away my strategy, but I would look for high ranked players and watch how they play. Also make sure that you are watching them play the setting they are good at. You can click on their name and see what games they play.
Whatever map you choose, be patient as most games take a few rounds to develop. Try not to spread yourself too thin and when possible avoid being the path of least resistance.
In the singles game I prefer the World 2.1 map because it's large, clearly defined and presents a wide variety of opportunities, but Classic, Asia or one of the smaller maps might be the best starting point. If you play with no cards some chance is removed and it's much clearer where you stand in the game. Subcontinents are very important and much like musical chairs you need to find a spot to land as early as possible to increase your bonus and give you a few extra armies to work with on your next turn.
Join a few games to get a feel for play and see how the process works. There's a wide variety of ways to play here with plenty of surprises and it's hard to know what will appeal to you the most until you do it.

You may want to ask yourself this: Do you really believe that people are willing to gladly dole out their "specific strategies" and "comments on the maps"?
Personally I enjoy winning more than loosing, and keep those things to myself. Why help other players? And no, I'm not a big fan of humanity in general.
