In the UK, VAT is our sales tax, and its 17.5%.
Second class postage stamp is 23p (42 cents) but you need more than one for anything other than a basic small letter.
20 cigarettes are £5 ($9)

12 months car tax: £210 ($378)

Okay, well, I don't know all the prices of those things, but, I'll give it a go:
Cigarette average in PA: I'd say $4.50 - $5.00 (In NY city, $9).
12 months car insurance (is that the same as car tax?) That can range from say... $700ish to well over $3000, depending on the car and driver record.
Average home prices.... well, in our area of PA... I'd say $400,000ish.... on Long Island where I came from, probably $450,000 - 500,000.
That is just my best estimation of things, I didn't look anything up.

You think its bad now? In those days, "a bag of gold will buy a loaf of bread" Bag of gold = a days wages. Can you imagine a loaf of bread costing around $100 more or less?

Try living in Ontario..Cigarettes= $9+, 24 Beer $38+, we have a general sales tax of 15% and a provincial sales tax of 10%. However, I can go to the hospital for free anytime I like and whine about my high-blood pressure and bleeding ulcers from worrying about being poor..

Average House - $200,000 for an upper middle class house? My house was made/sold in '94, and it cost $180,000. It's a really nice house. In my area of town, there are hundreds if not thousands of upper middle class/middle class houses in numerous neighborhoods.
I don't drink any beer or smoke, so don't ask me on that.
