This would make the map extremely confusing and force you to draw lines all over it connecting the possible diagonals. I would say either use digaonals or not, but don't use a few.

if you look in the bottom left area of the map it says that diagaonal attacks can be made anywhere on the board

Yes, but I suggested earlier that maybe i should make it so there are only some diagonal attacks possible (because a lot of places can be attacked from quite a few other places), but I think i will keep all diagonal attacks possible.

I thought about a chess map much time ago... The idea doesnt work, I believe. I dont understand nothing about this map, too.

Can you explain the real mean of the pieces for the risk games? Attack routes, I assume. So, someone that doesnt knows how to play chess, or is a very poor player stands no chances? Sincerely, I will not use my time to even pay attention to the map. If you want really do this, add some traditional lines to make clear the attack routes. Ah, and the squares without pieces? No countries there?

I'm not sure you read any of the thread so far. I think it will be a lot more clear once the armies are added to the maps but the squares with pieces on them are NOT countries. The blank squares are the countries, the pieces are just borders.

Peices added!

Post by cramill »

Okay everybody, I added peices.

How does it look? Also, does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do with the left part? I was thinking about adding an image of a chess clock in the middle of the left part. How are the continent bounuses? (as far as #s go. But I will probably make that look better later also.)

Your bonuses are good except for the orange continent. In my opinion it should be a 3, maybe 4

and i think the playability is good and would be better if you made the move that you said earlier

I would try taking the wood grain out, and replacing it with something lighter, like marble, or bamboo. just a thought

I think it looks good. My problem is with the layout. Red will be impossible to hold, and purple will be far too easy.

I'd eliminate the bishop at C4; isolate red a bit more somewhere else.

How about I take away the bishop as you said, and put some other peice at E6?

It doesn't look to me like the Pixellated pieces fit very well with the detail in the board, I hope you are going to change them :).

It does look rather good, reminiscent of the Crossword map mind you but I like an odd looking map, I'll definetely be playing it.

Looks like its coming along nicely. But the orange bonus is waay too high. Other than that, its looking good at this stage.

Though I also agree with the person above me about the pieces. The board you have looks very nice and classy, it would be cool if you found some classic classy looking pieces.

Oh yeah, i forgot to make the change to the orange bounus (should it be 3 or 4?), and I will probably change the red bounus to 7. And, I will see what I can do about the peices.

i think the orange bonus should be 3 and red 7

and about the pieces i dont know how you could do this but i have a game Chessmaster 5000 and it has real good board and peice grafics like real wood pieces maybe if you have that game or if you can find one like it on the internet if you look in the files in your computer where it is instaled then you could eventually find the folder with the good grafics in it

i dont know if you can do that but it is what i though of when i saw those grafics

Well the revision to the map allows white to take the black queen for free. Maybe you could move the black king up to protect it?

Let me see if I understand this... Green borders are H6, F5 and G4, right? And it have 6 countries, by the way...

Ok, I will move the black king.

Yes, green (the 'continent') can be attacked from G7 to H6 and from F3 to G4. Before, it could have been attacked from E6 to F5, but E6 is no longer a country. And green has 6 countries. And what do you mean by "by the way ..."?

Another question for everyone: Should the purple bounus be 4 or 5? (I'm leaning a little toward 5 myself).

Ok, orange will be 3, purple will be 4, and red will be 7 (and I did move the king back to E7) but I havent posted a new picture yet because these are all just minor changes (edit: never mind I posted a small picture to see if it works for size).

The problem with getting better peices is that they are hard to find, and you can't just use pictures of regular peices because they are different sizes and then they would not fit into the squares very neatly. Although, maybe a top-down view of the peices would work if i were using a picture of actual peices, but it may be too dificlut to see what peices they are, or it would look funny. So, what I am going for is peices like the ones I already have, ones that fit into the squares all nice. The current ones are the best I have found so far. If anyone can find better peices it would be nice. I did note that some of you say they are too pixellated. If I make the peices less pixellated would they be fine? or do you want better peices alltogether? Also, with the small version of the map, the current peices would probably not look very pixelated. Well, see for yourself:

Image

So, how is this for the small size? (I will probably have to make the font a little bigger for the note and the bounuses.)

You definately need to make the font bigger... also, that whole side has alot of wasted space. You might want to try to make a more elaborate Chess title and logo, and maybe put the continent values in some kind of box or table.

Yes, I am planning on all of that, but right now I am focusing on the board, but I will do that eventually.

Hm, well I've tried to catch up on this thread. Lets see...

I assume you will work on the side, the title, legend, etc. Perhaps some could come again from chess. Maybe include a timeclock, or incorporate that into the legend, perhaps behind 'Chess' you could have the opposing kings clashing against each other at an angle. I see a lot of fun that can be done over there, when you get the time and other areas hammered out.

As for the other visuals, I like the wood grain feel of the board. It feels real, but unfortunately the pieces don't quite yet. Perhaps look into altering the image. Is it possible to maybe make them look like stone? Or wood? Right now they feel like paper cut outs on a real hardwood board.

As for the gameplay, I think it seems balanced. It might be a little more difficult to get around the board, than in some maps, but I don't think so by too much.

Hopefully I'll be able to tune in again and look a little deeper.

I like what you've got thus far. I remember when this idea was first tossed around, months ago, I didn't see it working, or at least working on a mass playable level. But you are definitely starting to turn that idea around on me, and I am glad!
