After Long Await, Periodic Madness- v16 p 13[i][vacation]

Post by shadowsteel9 »

Periodic Madness

Version 15

Updates:
- Changed borders to white
- Narrowed the external black borders
- Changed colors around to help with red-green colorblindness

Small (571x424)
Image

Discussion Points:
- Could we get a bonus discussion going? I know that with exception of the Transitions they SEEM very high. Should we go with partial-hold bonuses a la Berlin 1961? Lower them in general? Keep them as is?
- Are the colors contrasted enough for the colorblind?
- Are explanations of unique features clear?
- Are the Lanthanides and Actinides TOO isolated from the rest of the map? If so, any way we could fix that?

1. 118 territories
2. 9 "continents3. Allowing Bonding
Hydrogen+1
Alkali Metals +3
Alkaline Earth Metals+3
Semiconductors+2
Organics+2
Other Metals+1,
Halogens+3
Noble Gases+3
Transition Metals,+1 per 3 in row +11 per row
Lanthanides,+1 per 3 in row +7 for all
Actinides +2 per 4 in row +9 for all

+1 for every adjacent pair of Cations/anions

General Rules

Transition Metals can attack all eight surrounding elements

Regular elements can attack only the four directly above below and to either side.

Radioactive elements have been added to have a -1 radioactive decay per turn

Hydrogen will now be able to attack the elements with the lowercase delta symbol.

Object of the game, to become master of the elements

Please scroll down the page to see a recent thread already made with partway this map idea.

Also, just so you know: generally, a new thread is made by someone intending to make and complete a map; ideas that you want to propose and discuss, so that someone else might like it and make a map out of it, go in the pinned thread at the top of this forum.

I hope I didn't come across as mean, since I'm relatively new here myself, and know that you can't be expected to know something that you don't know. Just informing you, so that you do. (know) :P

This idea used to be in Coleman's "stop fucking suggesting this idea without a draft already" thread.

I miss that thread. And Coleman. :(

prelim map

Post by shadowsteel9 »

Hey here it is, my Periodic Madness prelim map. hope you enjoy

Image

For those of you who can't read the text, it says

All nonmetals including Hydrogen and Semiconductors can attack any element directly above, below or to either side of them.

Ionic Bonds
Elements with opposite Cations/Anions are ionically bonded. These bonds allow for attacks and fortification to occur between them.

Metallic bonds
All metals have special bonds that allow them to attack and fortify all surrounding metals

This is probably the best Element map I've seen, gameplay-wise. The graphics still need a lot of work, and the text is almost completely unreadable, but the playing rules make a lot of sense. I'd play this map (once cleaned up a lot).

I think the problem isn't the color, its the fact that the background is so messy and grainy.

Ok, i've reworked it, and here's draft 2 of the many more to come

Changes include, better colors, a less grainy background, and hopefully clearer text.

Keep sending suggestions, this map has been abandoned 2 many times let's try to get this one up and running.

Your feedback is very important

make the background a solid color, it will make the words easier to read

i don't like the way the title looks either, its real sloppy.

How's that.

sry but there's a image restriction now, so it's smaller

Keep the feedback coming, and any graphic artists willing to help make this a success pm me

Saying Attack/Fortify is redundant. Just say "borders." WHAT is a Metal is not very well-defined, and since the Alkali Metals and Alkaline Earth Metals are heavily packed together, I'd say switching it just to Transition Metals. Also unclear is the borders with Actinium and Lanthanum. Are Hafnium and Rutherfordium bordering Lutetium and Lawrencium (as I think they should)? Or are Lutetium and Lawrencium bordering Actinium and Lanthanum as well? Definitely clear that up.

I like you bringing Ionic Bonds in as a bonus, very creative.

I like this. The colors on the actual table are pretty sweet too.
maybe change the font. it looks like it was done in mspaint or something... like its readable right now, but with the forum and server upgrade and all, i think we can afford to jazz it up a bit

Yes Hafnium and Rutherfordium are bordering Actinium and Lanthanum, ne ideas as to how i could make that clearer.

Dealing with the metallic bonds, i will consider giving it just to transition metals, (although in real life they exist between all metals), but if that would improve gameplay i think it's definitely doable

I think the borders I wanted cleared up need to be restated.
(Preferred) OR (Not Preferred):
Lutetium --> Hafnium OR Lutetium --> Actinium
Lawrencium --> Rutherfordium OR Lawrencium --> Lanthanum

And for how to make that apparent, narrow up the pink lines a bit and have the two going down, then two going from Lu/Lr up and around to Hf/Rf.

The new font doesn't work on the smaller text. Something simpler maybe?

And since Lu/Lr connect to La/Ac, could you put a little stub of the pink line pointing toward La/Ac? The way it is right now it could be interpreted either way.
