I am new to the site and recently finished my fifth game and thought I would move onto a more complex map. That being said I joined a supermax prison riot game and I was wondering what the best strategy is... should I take the warden, how important are weapons, is it possible to win without holding a gang leader?

It really depends on the drop. You have to break through a lot of neutrals to take the warden.
I find it's best to lock down a whole cell block then make a run at the warden. If you take the gas chamber too, make damn sure you can hold it. I have seen tons of players literally execute themselves in there.
I don't have a ton of experience on that map yet, but it looks like a lot of it depends on how many players there are and whether it is automatic or manual. If manual you play that game of poker/chicken where you determine where you're going to try to set up and establish bonuses. LIke the post before mine, I agree that Gen Pop looks the most tempting, but in the several games I've looked it, it also looks like it gets highly contested.
The weapons are tempting but dangerous. Few players want to risk resources knocking out 4 neutrals only to have some other player take it from them shortly thereafter. Usually the weapons in the cell blocks and gen pop get taken way before the yard. The yard weapons seem to get stared at for a long time.
If you drop a prisoner who is in a cell with a weapon and guarded by 3 neutrals outside, you can probably take it safely and have that little bonus for a long time.
Holding warden is a key to winning the map. That said, the gas chamber will either murder you, or save you. If you have the gas chamber and the warden , protect warden only.
It's better to capture 3 newfish early if you're not near a gang leader.
